Do you want to make it easy for readers to subscribe to your WordPress blog?

Many businesses miss out on the benefits of having a direct connection with their audience through email. By having people subscribe to your email list, you can increase traffic, make more sales, and build a relationship with your audience.

In this article, we’ll show you how to add email subscriptions to your WordPress blog and start building your email list.

Adding email subscription to your WordPress blog

Why Should You Add Subscribe via Email Option to Your Site?

While social media is one way to connect with your audience, email is still the most reliable form of communication.

It gives you a direct connection to your readers because you can email subscribers whenever you want. Plus, you have control over email, whereas you have very little control over social media platforms.

For instance, you could post on Facebook or Instagram to thousands of followers, but only a portion of them may see your content due to algorithms that determine your reach.

For more on this topic, see our article on why you should start building your email list (right away).

You might think it’s difficult to add an email subscription option to your website, but it’s not.

With all of the email marketing software available today, it’s become quite easy, and you can get started in just a few clicks.

Since there are dozens of email software to choose from, we’re going to share with you a few solutions we believe work best.

How to Add Email Subscription to Your WordPress Site

First, you’re going to need an email marketing service.

We recommend using Constant Contact because it is the most beginner friendly email marketing service for small businesses.

Constant Contact email marketing software

It comes with built-in tools to see your email performance, such as email opens and click rates. These tools can help you make decisions over time that improve your email campaigns and grow your business.

Their Email Plus option comes with features such as:

  • Automations
  • Surveys
  • Polls
  • Coupons
  • Online donations
  • A/B subject line testing

Constant Contact also works well with other tools like WordPress form plugins, so you can use it to grow your business. You’ll see a few of them, and how they can be used later in this article.

Some alternatives to Constant Contact are SendinBlue, ConvertKit, and MailerLite. All work similarly and have slightly different features.

For now, we’ll show you how to add an email subscription option in WordPress using Constant Contact. You can still follow along even if you’re using another email service as they all share similar concepts.

Creating Your Email Subscription List

The first thing you need to do is sign up for Constant Contact. Simply go to their home page, click on ‘sign up for free’, and fill out your information.

Once you’ve created your account, it’s time to set up your email list.

An email list is simply the list of email addresses that your users will provide when they sign up for your email subscription.

First, you need to click on the ‘Contacts’ button at the top of your Constant Contact dashboard.

Contacts link in Constant Contact

This will take you to the contacts page. From there, you need to click on the blue ‘Create List’ button.

Create Contact Constant list

You’ll be asked to provide a name for your email list. It can be whatever you want, but we’ll call it ‘My Newsletter’ for this example.

Create Constant Contact list name

And that’s it. Now you have a new list people can subscribe to.

The next step is to add an email subscription form to your WordPress website where your website visitors can sign up.

Adding Email Subscription Form in WordPress

Constant Contact comes with an email signup form builder, but the easiest way to get started is by using the WPForms plugin. It integrates seamlessly with Constant Contact to set up an optin form easily.

WPForms also has a limited free version called WPForms Lite. It also allows you to connect your forms to Constant Contact.

First, you need to install and activate the WPForms plugin. If you need help, then follow our guide on how to install a plugin for detailed instructions.

Upon activation, you need to visit WPForms » Add New page and then select the ‘Newsletter Signup Form’ template.

Add new WPForm

On the next page, you’ll get a prompt to set up your email marketing service in the marketing tab. We’ll get to that in a moment.

WPForms will now load a sample newsletter sign up with the form builder interface. It will include first and last name and email address fields to the form.

Newsletter signup form fields

You can change the form fields if you want. For instance, you can add a full name and email address field. You can click on a form field to change its title or move them up and down.

Once you are satisfied with the signup form, click on the big orange ‘SAVE’ button at the top.

Now, it’s time to set up your confirmation message. This is what your users will see when they submit the form.

Simply, switch to the ‘Settings’ tab and then click on the ‘Confirmation’ section.

Confirmation message

By default, WPForms will show a confirmation message which you can change to anything you want. You can also change the confirmation type and redirect users to any page or URL.

Now that your newsletter sign up form is ready. Let’s connect it to Constant Contact.

Simply click on the ‘Marketing’ tab and select ‘Constant Contact’.

Connect your Constant Contact account

Next, click on the ‘Add New Connection’ button and you’ll see a popup that asks you to name your connection. We called ours ‘My Newsletter Form’ but you can name it whatever you want.

After that, click on the ‘Click here to register with Constant Contact’ link.

Register Constant Contact with WPForms

It will open a popup where you will be asked to allow WPForms to connect with your Constant Contact account.

Allow WPForms to connect with Constant Contact

Click on the ‘Allow’ button to continue.

You’ll be given a long authorization code to register your form.

WPForm authorization code

Copy and paste the authorization code in WPForms settings and provide an account nickname. The ‘Account nickname’ could be anything you want.

Finally, click on the connect button to continue.

On the next screen, you’ll be able to select the fields you want to pass through from your form to Constant Contact.

We selected ‘email’ and ‘full name’ but you can select as many as you want. Just be sure that those two fields are included in your newsletter sign up form fields.

WPForm email fields

Click the big orange ‘Save’ button when you’re done.

Now that we have the form set up, we want to place it on our WordPress website. For this example, we’re going to place it in our sidebar. But the form can go on any page you want.

Go to Appearance » Widgets page and add the WPForm widget to your sidebar.

Put a Constant Contact form in your sidebar

Provide a title for your widget and then select your newsletter sign up form. Don’t forget to click on the save button to store your widget settings.

You can now visit your website to see your email subscription form in action.

Constant Contact form in sidebar

You now have an email subscription box in your sidebar. And whenever someone fills out their name and email, they get subscribed to your newsletter.

Now that everything is set up, let’s take a look at how to send emails to your subscribers.

How to Write and Send Emails to Your Blog Subscribers

There are a few ways people can get your updates, and that’s through regular emails or an RSS feed.

The RSS feed method automatically sends users an email whenever you publish a new blog post. However, it is less effective, has very low open rates, and users get annoyed when they receive too many emails.

We recommend writing your emails manually. This allows you to make your emails more personalized and conversational, add any content you want, and choose your own frequency.

Most popular bloggers send an email newsletter once a week. You can set your own frequency and schedule the emails ahead of time, so that your users get them on the same day and time every week.

We’ll now walk you through writing your first email and sending it to your subscribers.

First, go to the ‘Campaigns’ page in your Constant Contact account dashboard and then click the ‘Create’ button.

Create email in Constant Contact

You’ll then select ‘Email’ under ‘Choose a campaign.’

Select email in Constant Contact

Next, you’ll need to name your newsletter. This is for organization and you can change it later if you want.

Name your newsletter

After you click on ‘Open in editor,’ you’ll see the option to choose a template. We’ve chosen the Basic Newsletter template for this example, but you can pick anything you want.

On the next page, you’ll be able to edit, add to, or remove any of the elements you see. Here’s what ours looks like as an example:

Example newsletter

At the top, you’ll see the subject and preheader. To change this, you just click that area and add whatever you want.

On the left side, you’ll see a handful of options you can drag directly into your newsletter template. You can add text, buttons, images, and more.

In this example, we added a few photos, some text, and some links. To add a link to your newsletter, you can highlight any text you want.

Insert link into email

Click the chain link icon, and then paste the link to your blog post, like this:

Paste link into text

Click ‘Insert’ and you’re ready to go. Now, for the last step, click ‘Continue’ in the upper right corner and you’ll see the following:

Send your email

Make sure you check the box next to your list (My Newsletter), and then hit the ‘Send Now’ button at the top.

And that’s how you send your very first email manually. Also, if you want to schedule it for later, you can choose that option and set a date for it to send.

You can repeat this process at any time you want to notify your subscribers about anything new on your blog.

How to Get More Email Subscribers

Did you know that more than 70% people visiting your website will simply never see it again? This why you have added an email subscription option to your blog so that you can notify users about new content, offers, and services.

However, adding just one sign up form in your sidebar is not enough. You’ll need to find more ways to quickly get more email subscribers.

This is where OptinMonster comes in. It is the best conversion optimization software in the world and helps you convert more website visitors into subscribers.

Instead of embedding a form in your sidebar that probably won’t get noticed, you can create opt-in forms that convert well and have been tested on thousands of sites.

With OptinMonster, You’ll get floating header and footer bars, slide-in boxes, welcome mats, inline forms, and lightbox popups.

Select campaign type

Next, you need to choose a campaign template that you can further customize to your liking:

Select campaign template

For instance, you can set up a popup on your site that triggers when someone is about to hit the back button in their browser. This is known as an exit-intent popup.

So right before someone leaves your site, they get a chance to subscribe, and many do because this has been tested on thousands of sites.

Lightbox popup

What’s great is OptinMonster integrates perfectly with any email marketing software and all types of websites. For more tips check out these tested and easy ways to grow your email list faster.

7 Best Shopify Alternatives in 2020 (Cheaper and More Powerful)

Are you comparing Shopify alternatives to weigh their pros and cons?

You might have thought about using Shopify to create an online store. While it’s a popular option, it may not be the best fit for your eCommerce business.

In this article, we’ll compare the best Shopify alternatives along with their pros and cons, so you can choose the best platform to build an online store.

Shopify alternatives to consider for your online store

Is Shopify the Right Choice for Your Online Store?

Shopify is an all-in-one eCommerce platform. It handles all the technical details that goes into running an online store, like hosting, domain name, maintenance, software updates, and more.

This makes Shopify a popular choice among business owners.

However, it doesn’t offer the same flexibility and freedoms that many other top eCommerce platforms offer. It is also more expensive than many alternatives on the market with their basic plan starting from $29/month.

That being said, let’s take a look at some of the best Shopify alternatives with the pros and cons of each option.

1. WooCommerce

The WooCommerce website

WooCommerce is the most popular eCommerce platform in the world, and it is also our top pick for creating any type of online store.

It is beginner-friendly and incredibly easy to use. WooCommerce comes with hundreds of professionally designed website templates, and many of them are available for free.

You can also add any new feature to your eCommerce store using WooCommerce extensions (many of them are free as well).

There is also a ton of free online help and WooCommerce tutorials which makes it easier for you to learn and grow your online eCommerce business.

There are also more payment gateways extensions for WooCommerce available than any other platform. WooCommerce is used globally, so you will be able to integrate payment gateways supported in your targeted regions.

You will need to pay for web hosting and a domain to run WooCommerce. There are lots of options for WooCommerce hosting, but our top recommendation is Bluehost.

They are offering our readers a fantastic deal where you get a free domain name, free SSL certification, and hosting for $2.75/month:

→ Click Here to Claim This Exclusive Bluehost Offer ←

Price:

WooCommerce plugin itself is free.

However, you will need to pay the usual costs of running a WordPress website. This includes web hosting, your domain name, and any paid plugins you want to use for your online store.

2. MemberPress

The MemberPress website

MemberPress is our top pick for creating a membership site. It’s a great option if you want to offer digital content to customers. It lets you take subscription payments, or just charge one-time fee for digital downloads.

MemberPress is easy to set up, and you can use it to protect premium content on your site in lots of different ways.

For instance, it’s easy to protect all pages with a specific parent page, so only registered users can see them. MemberPress also lets you ‘drip’ content so that members don’t receive it all at once.

You can even set up different payment levels if you want to sell several different memberships or online products.

MemberPress integrates with lots of other tools such as popular email marketing services, live chat software, etc. It also has built-in support for PayPal and Stripe payments.

Price:

MemberPress costs from $129/year for the basic plan when you use our MemberPress coupon code.

3. BigCommerce

The BigCommerce website

BigCommerce is a fully hosted all-in-one eCommerce platform. The hosting, SEO, payment features, and more are all provided for you by BigCommerce. You don’t need to set anything up separately.

There’s also a BigCommerce WordPress plugin that lets you run a full BigCommerce store on your WordPress website. You can login to BigCommerce to manage your store and use WordPress to add / edit website content as normal.

There are hundreds of third-party apps and integrations that can be added onto BigCommerce. They have both free and paid apps available in their app marketplace. This gives you plenty of ways to add features like product popups with OptinMonster, cart abandonment, and more to your store as your business grows.

BigCommerce is a particularly good option if you’re not very confident with technology. The support team is available 24/7, and you can get phone, live chat, and email support. BigCommerce will handle things like backups, updates, and security for your store.

Price:

BigCommerce costs from $29.95/month. If you make more than $50,000 in sales per year, then you’ll need to upgrade to a more expensive plan.

4. Easy Digital Downloads

The Easy Digital Downloads website

Easy Digital Downloads lets you sell virtual (downloadable) products from your WordPress site. It’s specifically designed for selling digital products, so it’s not a good alternative to Shopify if you sell physical goods.

The Easy Digital Downloads plugin automatically protects your files. You can restrict how many times a customer can download a file. You can also let the download link expire after a set period of time. These methods prevent customers from sharing their purchased files with other people.

Easy Digital Downloads works well even if you have multiple digital products to sell. There’s a built-in shopping cart system where customers can buy several products at once. It’s also easy to make a customer account page, so that people can easily view all the products they’ve bought.

As with any WordPress plugin, you’ll need a domain name and WordPress hosting in order to use Easy Digital Downloads. It’s not a standalone solution.

There’s lots of help available through the support forums, videos, and tutorials. If you pay for the premium version, you’ll get priority support through email.

Price:

Easy Digital Downloads itself is free. There are a number of extensions available, some also free and some paid. Pricing plans start from $99/year, and these give access to email support and certain extensions.

5. Constant Contact Website Builder

The Constant Contact Website Builder website

Constant Contact is best known as an email marketing service, but the company also has a beginner-friendly website builder. You can use this to quickly and easily create an online store.

The built-in eCommerce functionality in the Constant Contact website builder lets you easily choose a layout, add products, and set up payments. There are also features that let you create a logo and analyze your website traffic.

You can try out Constant Contact’s website builder completely free of charge. Once it’s time to launch your site, you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan.

The drag and drop interface makes this website builder really easy to use. There are over 550,000 free professional quality images to pick from for your site too.

Constant Contact also includes 24/7 support through phone and live chat, so it’s easy to get help if you need it.

Price:

Constant Contact’s website builder costs just $10/month. There’s a 30-day money-back guarantee, too.

6. Magento

The Magento website

Magento is an open source eCommerce platform, just like WordPress is an open source website builder platform.

You can use the community edition of Magento with any web host that supports it. We recommend SiteGround’s Magento hosting for this.

There’s also Magento Commerce, which is a paid platform. This includes lots of features and support, but you need to ask for an enterprise quote to get pricing.

Magento has a healthy extensions ecosystem that lets you add new functionality. Many of these are free, but a lot of them are premium extensions.

Magento is a powerful platform with lots of flexibility, but it can be tricky to get started with if you’re a beginner. It’s a good fit if you’re running a business and have developers on hand, or if you want to hire a developer to set things up.

Price:

The open source version of Magento is free. However, you’ll need to pay for web hosting that’s powerful enough to run a fully featured online store.

7. Weebly

The Weebly website

Weebly is an all-in-one website builder and eCommerce platform, so you don’t need to buy hosting separately. It comes with dozens of website designs that you can edit using drag and drop tools.

Weebly lets you easily create an online store. Their platform gives you the ability to sell digital items as well as physical ones. There are also options for selling services and taking donations.

With Weebly, you also get extra features like a mobile app to manage your store, automated abandoned cart emails, and more.

There are over 300 Weebly apps that you can add to your site to give it new features. Many of these are free, but some cost extra.

However, Weebly doesn’t have the full range of customization options that other eCommerce platforms like WooCommerce can offer.

Price:

Weebly’s business plan is $25/month. This removes the 3% transaction fee that Weebly would otherwise charge on all your sales.

There’s also a free version of Weebly, but this doesn’t include eCommerce tools.

Which is the Best Shopify Alternative for Your Online Store?

For most people, WooCommerce is the best Shopify alternative. It’s easy to use, and fairly quick to get started with. Best of all, it has lots of flexibility since WooCommerce offers the largest extension ecosystem and pre-made template library.

MemberPress is a great option if you want to offer digital products or online courses that people subscribe to. It’s easy to use and again offers lots of power and flexibility.

BigCommerce is another good alternative that offers the similar feature set as Shopify without the restriction of specific payment gateways or extra fees.

6 Best WordPress Newsletter Plugins (Easy to Use + Powerful)

Do you want to create an email newsletter for your WordPress site? Creating an email list is one of the best things you can do to grow your business.

In this article, we will share some of the best WordPress newsletter plugins that you can use to easily build and grow your email list.

Best WordPress newsletter plugins (easy to use)

  • You can control how fast emails go out, which is very useful if you’re sending them through your web host and they place limits on you.

Cons

  • The spam prevention isn’t as good as with some other options. You might find you get some spam subscribers through your signup form.
  • You’ll ideally need to connect Newsletter to an external SMTP provider. They don’t provide a “Sending” option or similar like MailPoet does.
  • Pricing

The basic version of Newsletter is free, regardless of how many emails you send. If you want the pro extensions and priority support, it costs $65/year.

    Final Thoughts

When it comes to WordPress newsletter plugins, you almost always want to use a proper email marketing platform that offers full email delivery services like Constant Contact, Sendinblue, Drip, etc.

The challenge is that most of these platforms lack powerful signup form features, and that’s where WordPress newsletter plugins like OptinMonster and too some extent form builder plugins like WPForms can help.

These plugins let you connect your WordPress site with powerful email marketing services, so you get the best of both worlds.

Most professionals and power users DO NOT use a newsletter plugin inside WordPress to manage their email list because they don’t want the hassle of using an SMTP plugin and connecting it with an email delivery service.

Your email list is too important and valuable, and its best practice to let the expert email marketing companies handle that part for your business. Even at WPBeginner and our software businesses, we use third-party email marketing companies even though we have all the technical know-how.

We hope this article helped you learn about the best WordPress newsletter plugins for creating and building your email list. You might also enjoy our tried and tested ways to grow your email list faster, and our list of the must have WordPress plugins for all business sites.

What Is an Email Blast? How to Do an Email Blast “the RIGHT Way”

Do you want to know what is an email blast and how to do it “the right way”?

An email blast or broadcast sends a single email message to many subscribers in your mailing list. This can be highly effective strategy to get more sales, and bloggers use these blasts to get more website traffic.

In this article, we will explain how to do an email blast the proper way and share some examples.

Properly sending an email blast

What Is an Email Blast?

An email blast is a single email message that is sent to an entire email list, a large segment of that list, or many email lists at the same time.

These emails target most or all contacts in your mailing list, making an email blast a broad reach-out campaign.

Email blasts are also known as broadcast emails, mass emails, bulk emails, e-blasts, and email campaigns. Most people use the term ’email campaigns’ to avoid the aggressive feeling associated with the term ’email blast’.

Email blasts are mainly used for sending promotional content and newsletters. At WPBeginner, we use email blasts to promote our premium WordPress plugins and share our helpful tutorials.

For example, look at the email campaign All in One SEO for WordPress sent on their birthday sale event.

Example of a flash sale email blast

If you want to let all your subscribers know about special offers, then email blasts are the most reliable and efficient form of communication.

Are Email Blasts Outdated?

Although email blasts are great for delivering any message to a large number of people, some consider them an outdated communication method.

That’s because email blasts are bulk emails sent to everyone regardless of their choice, priorities, and needs. At times, blast emails can feel irrelevant and useless to the recipients.

Due to this, the email recipients may ignore the message, mark the email as spam, or even unsubscribe from your email list.

Here are the top reasons why users don’t like email blasts:

1. Unsegmented: Email blasts often use the entire mailing list without segmentation. Your email subscribers are usually very different, and they may be interested in different products or services.

2. Untargeted: The email blasts send the same message to everyone without considering their interests, past interactions, or needs. Users often unsubscribe from your mailing list after receiving these unwanted emails.

3. Not personalized: We all love reading a message that addresses us personally. Email blasts that don’t personalize the emails are often marked as spam.

4. Unexpected: Broadcast emails are usually unexpected, so there can be a natural feeling of resistance from the recipients.

Unlike 10 or 15 years ago, many new marketing methods are available, like social media, pay-per-click advertising, and more. However, none are as effective as email.

So, you might be wondering: is email blast dead? The answer is NO.

Email is still the most reliable form of communication in the world. With new technology, there are better ways to do an email blast to get higher results.

We will explain how to do an email blast the RIGHT way in the following section.

How to Do an Email Blast “the Right Way” – Step by Step

Marketers from big and small companies alike are still using email blasts to promote their product launches, discount offers, and more.

And the results are brilliant. That’s because they are using email blasts the right way.

If you are not a professional marketer, you can follow the steps below to run an email blast successfully:

Step 1: Choose the Best Email Blast Service

First, you need a robust email marketing service to create an email blast. An email marketing service lets you create a mailing list, segment that list, and send bulk emails.

There are dozens of email marketing services in the market. Among them, Constant Contact, Brevo, Drip, and ConvertKit are the most popular companies.

We have tried and tested all of the above email marketing services, and we believe they are great at what they offer. However, we recommend Constant Contact because they provide the best deal.

Constant Contact is the most beginner-friendly email blast software. It has dozens of pre-made email templates to help you quickly get started. You can choose a template and easily customize that using their drag and drop editor.

It has simple options for collecting emails, automation features to send/trigger emails based on user actions, and more. Plus, it lets you segment your subscribers and send targeted email campaigns.

To get started, you need to visit the Constant Contact website and sign up for a new account.

Constant Contact website

You can quickly create a Constant Contact account as they offer a free trial account (no credit card required).

Once done, you will see your Constant Contact dashboard, where you can manage your email lists, see subscribers, and send email blasts.

Constant Contact Dashboard

Alternatively, you can also use Brevo, which offers a free email marketing plan.

Step 2. Create Your Email List

An email list is simply a list of email addresses you can send messages to. It is like your contact book containing the email addresses of your subscribers and prospective customers.

To create an email list in Constant Contact, just go to the ‘Contacts’ menu at the top and click on the ‘Create List’ button.

Create list in Constant Contact

An email list is where you store all your email contacts.

Clicking on the button will bring up a popup where you need to enter a name for your email list and click the ‘Save’ button.

List name

Constant Contact will now create your email list.

The next step is to add contacts to your list. Just open your new email list, and click the ‘Add Contacts’ button.

Add contacts to your list

Constant Contact lets you add contacts in multiple ways. You can type in a contact, upload from a file, or import from Gmail, Outlook, and other apps.

If you want to grow your email list faster, then you can see our guide on easy ways to grow an email list.

Step 3: Segment Your Email List

Once you have an email list, the next step is to segment it. Email segmentation is the most important part of doing a successful email blast.

Email segmentation divides your email subscribers into smaller groups or segments to send highly-targeted emails.

You can segment your email subscribers based on gender, age, geographical location, interests, purchase history, contact activity, and more.

For example, a bookstore may create different segments for arts, physics, and maths students to send targeted emails.

Email segmentation is a crucial task that must be done with a clear goal. You need to be clear on which subscribers should be included in a segment.

For more details, you can see this guide on smarter ways to segment your email list.

To create segments in Constant Contact, you need to go to the ‘Contacts’ menu and click on the ‘Segments’ tab. After that, click on the ‘Create Segment’ button.

Create segment

Constant Contact offers a bunch of criteria you can choose from.

In the next screen, you can create a segment by choosing the criteria you want.

Segment criteria

You can create a segment by contact activity like emails sent, opened, clicked, or did not open. You can also include email subscribers by contact details, including job title, city, country, etc.

Once you are finished, simply click on the ‘Save and Preview’ button.

Then, you can repeat the process if you need to create more segments.

Step 4: Create a Targeted Email Campaign

After creating segments, the next task is to create a targeted email campaign or an email blast.

You can create an email campaign in different ways depending on the email marketing software you use.

To design an email campaign in Constant Contact, you must go to the ‘Campaigns’ menu and then click the ‘Create’ button.

Create email blast campaign

This will bring up a popup showing a bunch of campaigns you can make with Constant Contact.

You need to choose the Email option to continue.

Choose email campaign

After that, you will see dozens of pre-made email templates ready for use.

You can preview the templates individually or simply type keywords to search for a template.

Simply click to choose a template as a starting point.

After that, the email campaign builder page will open. First, you need to name your campaign.

Next, click the ‘Email Settings’ link to edit the email subject line, sender name, and more.

Then, you need to click on the ‘Personalize’ option.

You will see some text with large brackets added in your subject line.

For example, you can see [[FIRSTNAME OR “customer”]] in the screenshot below.

Next, you will see email send (blasting) options on the screen.

From here, you can select recipients from email lists or segments. For example, we will choose the segment that we created earlier.

Email sending options

In the right sidebar, you will see options to send your email campaign now or schedule it for later.

Step 5: Measure Results and Improve Email Deliverability

Sending an email campaign doesn’t mean that your work is done. After posting your email blast, you will need to measure your results and see how the recipients interact with your messages.

Top email marketing services like Constant Contact have built-in email stats features.

To view your email campaign stats, just click on the ‘Reporting’ menu item at the top.

Reporting in Constant Contact

You can also see the performance of your email campaigns individually by clicking on them.

You will see the email open rate, the total sent emails, bounces, and successful deliveries. The reports will also reveal click rate, did not open, unsubscribes, and marked spam stats.

Email stats

The biggest challenge of email blasting is email deliverability. A lot of the time, your emails don’t get delivered at all or are sent to the spam box directly.

Here are some proven techniques to improve email deliverability:

  • Update your email list occasionally to remove fake email addresses, deleted emails, and more.
  • Maintain the frequency of your emails (no spikes).
  • Avoid misleading subject lines.
  • Make your emails useful with valuable and engaging content.

Best Email Blast Examples

There are two main types of emails used for marketing: Broadcast Emails (Email blasts) and Triggered Emails.

Triggered emails are automated emails that are sent to your users following their actions. For example, you can send a welcome email after a user subscribes to your list.

Email blasts are different because you will manually create campaigns and send them to a large segment at once. Email blasting is done with the belief that the single message will be helpful to every subscriber in a list or segment.

You can’t broadcast a welcome email to your entire email list, which may also include old customers. So, email blasts can be used only for specific purposes.

Here are the best email blast examples:

1. Flash Sale

If you are offering a flash sale, you can send mass emails in bulk to inform all of your subscribers.

Here are a couple of subject line examples for a flash sale email blast:

  • [FLASH SALE] Fashion Shoes 40%-60% off!
  • [LAST CHANCE] 40%-60% off sale ends today!

2. Event Information like Webinars

You can send mass emails if you run online courses and webinars for your users.

Here are a couple of email subject lines for an event information email blast:

  • LIVE Training: 10 steps to create a winning email campaign
  • Join us LIVE tomorrow at 5 PM for a FREE marketing class

3. New Products

You can send an email blast when you launch a new product. It’s best to segment your list into already purchased customers and new subscribers so that you can send different campaigns to them.

4. Newsletters

Newsletters are the most common type of broadcast email. News, magazine websites, blogs, as well as business or non-profit organizations send newsletters to inform their subscribers about the latest news.

Best Free Form Builder Plugins WordPress 2019

There’s no shortage of free amazing form plugins to make data collection in WordPress a breeze. I noticed that a lot of form plugins in the WordPress plugin repository appear feature-rich, but once you install them, most features aren’t available unless you upgrade.

I call this, upsell hell. Especially since some form plugins charge you for every extension that adds another feature, so it can get really expensive really fast.

That’s not a problem when you have an enterprise site, but what about the times that you’re building a little site for a friend as a favor and you need to keep costs in check?

So in this post, we’re going to answer the question of what is the best free WordPress contact form plugin? We’ll look at some of the most popular form plugins and see what the free version really includes.

Judging The Best Free Form Builder WordPress

Cutting through the marketing hype was a lot more tricky than I thought, since the plugin pages in the repository had every feature the form includes, but it didn’t say which features are premium and which are free. At least with Gravity Forms, you know what you’re going to pay since they don’t have a free version. That’s also why they’re not on the list. We’re focusing on the freebies.

To find the best form plugin for WordPress and determine what was actually included free, I installed each one on my test site and built a form. If there was an extension that was created by the form developers that was free, I counted the features as included for free.

Some form plugins, such as Contact Form 7, have lots of free extensions in the WordPress repository, but they’re of varying quality since they’re not by the original developer, so I did not include these free features in my assessment. This is more because assessing the independent extensions for each plugin would be its own blog post. If you want to include them in your own assessment go for it!

To make the assessment process easy, I created this Airtable with the form plugins I’m going to discuss in this article so you can make an apples-to-apples comparison of the free features.

The preview above cuts off some of the data, so either open the full version or scroll to the right to see the additional columns with information about premium pricing, additional fancy fields, additional form types you can build, etc.

The Best Free Form Builder WordPress Plugin

I listed the plugins in order by feature-richness. The plugins with the most free features, integrations, form types, etc. I listed near the top. The ones with the least free features I listed near the bottom.

Forminator

Forminator on Wordpress

Now I know what you’re thinking; of course, I would list WPMU DEV’s Forminator as the best WordPress form plugin at the very top. How modest ;)

While other form plugins have similar features, I found that Forminator offers you premium features for free, no strings attached. You don’t even need to be a WPMU DEV member or sign up for a free trial. This is the same plugin that is available to everyone in the WordPress plugin repository.

And we don’t just include premium features that should be basic, like spam protection, the ability to store entries in the database and multi-page forms.

Forminator gives away valuable time-saving and money-making features for nothing. Nada.

  • Integrations with other apps, such as Zapier, Google Sheets and a bunch of email marketing apps.
  • Integrations with popular payment portals for a simple eCommerce solution. In fact, with if you’re using Stripe, you’re really going to love how someone can make a payment without leaving the page.
  • Codeless styling so you can create the look you want without tinkering with CSS.
  • Conditional Logic so you can create dynamic forms.
  • Calculations so your forms can “do the math” for you.

You get full access to 24 advanced fields so you can get your data validation on. With Forminator’s form preview button, you can view your form as you’re building it and designing it, without having to embed it on a page first to see if it looks right.

Forminator is also the only free plugin that allows you to create forms AND polls, submissions, quizzes, and submit blog posts from a form. And it has a powerful API that you can access for free and use to build your own custom extensions.

Something that’s really important for our European friends is advanced features to help you stay compliant with GDPR. You can adjust how long data is retained, set how long to keep an IP before it is anonymized and there’s even a field for a GDPR checkbox. You’re welcome.

Get your copy of Forminator and prepare yourself to feel like you stole it because you got so many awesome things for free. What’s the catch you say? No catch!

Caldera Forms

Next up on our list of feature-rich plugins is Caldera Forms. Out of all the forms on the list, Caldera Forms surprised me the most because I thought it was going to be lower on the list, but there are a lot of premium features that are available for free.

Also, they have a nice selection of templates to get you started that are included with the free version. Forminator only has design templates for now.

The free version of Caldera Forms gives you:

  • Conditional logic
  • The ability to submit blog posts with a form
  • Calculations
  • Some free integrations: Postmatic, Slack, Payfast and Easy Digital Downloads
  • A couple of fancy form fields: a TinyMCE WYSIWYG editor and a color picker

I noticed that out of all the plugins I tried, Caldera Forms had the most unique features that weren’t available in the other plugins. In some cases, no other plugin had these features.

For instance, no other free plugin has an Easy Digital Downloads integration or form revisions, which if you make a lot of changes, can be very useful. It was also the only form with a color picker field and only Ninja Forms also has a TinyMCE WYSIWYG editor.

Ninja Forms

Screenshot of Ninja Forms Home Page

With 1 million installs of the free version, Ninja Forms is the third most popular form plugin in the WordPress repository.

When looking it over I was neither impressed nor disappointed. The basic features you expect from a quality form plugin are there, plus a couple of extras. And even though there is no codeless styling option, some premium themes are optimized for Ninja Forms so your forms match the rest of your site effortlessly.

Calculations and a TinyMCE WYSIWYG editor are some nice free bonuses. And you do get some templates which I like since they give you a head start.

They also give you a lot of fields right out of the box. I thought special fields designed to collect information like URLs, address, phone numbers, and emails were included in all form plugins, but further down the list, I learned this wasn’t true. Ninja Forms, however, does give you 26 useful field types, which I appreciate.

What I don’t like about Ninja Forms is the pricing. Out of all the form plugins, the premium version is the most expensive at $99/year for one site and all the different extensions have different prices so it can add up quickly. Plus it can be confusing to figure out what the whole thing is ultimately going to cost.

Now I know we’re focusing on the free features of these plugins. I bring up the paid upgrades for Ninja Forms in particular because the steep increase in price might become a problem in some use cases.

For example, sometimes I’ll try to do a good deed and take the time to build something for a non-profit or a close friend, using a free tool. Later, they’ll ask for a simple additional feature and I’ll say something dumb like “not a problem, I’ll get that added for you” thinking that spending like $30-40 bucks isn’t that big a deal only to find out it’s going to cost more like $150. Then you have to have that awkward conversation that makes you feel like a jerk or rebuild the form on a lower cost alternative and feel resentful.

I’ve included the premium pricing for all the plugins in the Airtable so you can use it when making your decision. This does not include the pricing of additional extensions though.

Formidable Forms (Lite)

Screenshot of Formidable Forms Home Page

Formidable Forms is another plugin that I was neither impressed or disappointed by. It was one of the easier plugins to use because it had one of the better designed-interfaces.

Formidable was also the only other form plugin besides Forminator that includes a codeless styling module. You can see your edits on a sample form as you make them without having to open another window. There’s also a section where you can add custom CSS, which can be useful for some multisite installations.

Formidable does not charge you per add-on once you decide to upgrade, but you may need a higher plan in order to be able to access all the features.

Formidable Forms Lite felt adequate. Nothing fancy, but enough to get the job done. You can import/export forms, store/export entries in the database, protect your form from spam and use merge tags when creating your emails.

What would make me pick Formidable Forms over others (if Forminator wasn’t an option) is the codeless style editor because of how easy it is to use.

Contact Form 7

Screenshot of Contact Form 7Home Page

What can I say about Contact Form 7 that hasn’t been said already? With 5 million installs it is the most popular free form plugin in the WordPress repository and there are a bunch of free extensions written by others to improve the functionality.

As I mentioned earlier, I didn’t include these extensions in my assessment because IMO using a lot of plugins/extensions designed by random people makes it more likely that something will go wrong with every plugin you add. If you like to live on the wild side with a cool devil-may-care attitude, then go for it.

Contact Form 7 feels like it’s the form plugin the dinosaurs used. Even though it totally gets the job done, the interface is as bare bones as it gets. To add features you add code snippets. To add fields you add merge tags. No drag and drop editors here.

Entries aren’t stored in the database so you need to make sure your email delivery game is strong otherwise you’re not going to get that data. This is so risky because SMTP issues happen more often than you think, so you could miss out on valuable opportunities.

There are some bonus features you wouldn’t expect from such a simple solution. The ability to create quizzes, upload files, and a Constant Contact integration comes to mind.

If you’ve been making do with Contact Form 7 specifically because it’s free, then you’re going to love Forminator.

WP Forms (Lite)

Screenshot of WPForms Home Page

WP Forms is the second most popular form plugin in the repository with 2 million installs. TBH it was my least favorite even though it has a beautifully designed WordPress drag and drop form builder interface.

When they say lite, they mean super lite. WP Forms (Lite) felt more like a free sample so you can see how things are laid out than an actual usable plugin you can use if you’re trying to save a few bucks.

I found myself saying “really!? you don’t include blank?” a lot. I don’t talk to plugins often, only when they disappoint me and WP Forms did that a lot.

For instance, the free version doesn’t store entries in the database. I expect that from bare-bones form plugin, but not WP Forms.

Also, there are only 8 fields to choose from:

  • Single line text
  • Paragraph text
  • Dropdown
  • Multiple Choice
  • Checkbox
  • Numbers
  • Name
  • Email

You’re not going to give me an address, phone number or URL field? :( How am I supposed to validate that the data is correct? Even the lite version of Formidable forms has 13 fields to choose from.

There isn’t even spam protection so good luck with that.

The two bonus features it does come with is a free Constant Contact extension and templates. Seriously after using all these other form plugins the one thing I didn’t know I wanted was templates.

But yeah, WP Forms, not my favorite. The bear is cute though. The bare interface on the other hand…not cute.

How to Create an Email Newsletter the RIGHT WAY (Step by Step)

Do you want to create an email newsletter for your website, blog, or eCommerce business?

An email newsletter helps you stay in touch with your users, bring them back to your website, and convert them into customers.

The challenge is that many beginners find it difficult to start an email newsletter. Mainly because they feel that it would be too technical or time-consuming.

That used to be the case 10 years ago, but now creating an email newsletter is so easy that even a non-techy can do it!

Having built an email newsletter with over 1 million subscribers, we have decided to create an ultimate guide on how to start an email newsletter with step by step instructions.

Our goal is to help you walk through the process and set up your email newsletter the RIGHT way.

How to easily create a newsletter

Since this is a comprehensive guide, we have included a table of content for easier navigation.

What is an Email Newsletter?

An email newsletter is a form of online communication that allows you to send news, tips, and updates about your product, business, or non-profit.

In order to receive these updates, people need to join your email list by providing their email address. These users are referred to as subscribers, leads, or contacts.

Organizations and individuals use email newsletters in many different ways. For example, businesses use email newsletters to send users product information, new arrivals, and latest updates.

Websites and blogs use email newsletters to send content updates, increase traffic, and building a loyal following.

Why Start an Email Newsletter?

Did you know, that more than 75% of people visiting your website today will never find it again?

It is not your fault, it’s just that the internet is so huge and there is a lot of content out there.

Starting an email newsletter will allow you to convert those website visitors into subscribers. Once they join your email newsletter, you will be able to stay in touch and bring them back to your website.

Basically without an email newsletter, you are losing potential subscribers and customers every day.

Now you may be thinking, ‘ What if we ask users to follow us on social media? Wouldn’t that provide a way to contact those users?’

It will, and you should definitely build a social media following. However, you don’t own those social media platforms.

Social media giants like Facebook and Twitter limit your audience’s reach. More importantly, most of your users may not be checking their social feeds as often.

On the other hand, people tend to check their email inbox several times every day. Most users use a mobile device with notifications turned on for emails.

For more on this topic, see our article on why building an email newsletter is so important.

Who Should Start an Email Newsletter?

Many of our users often ask us if they should make a newsletter for their business, blog, or organization. Our answer is always ‘Yes’.

Even if you are just starting out, you should start building your newsletter from day 1. Each day you are not doing this, you are losing money, subscribers, and potential customers.

Email marketing is a win-win situation regardless of your industry, business, or website traffic.

1. Email Marketing for Small Businesses

Business websites, regardless of their industry or size, can always benefit from creating a newsletter.

It is the most cost-effective way to stay in touch with your existing customers, website visitors, and potential customers.

2. Email Newsletter for Ecommerce Websites

A study found that more than 44% of email recipients have made at least one purchase because of a promotional email.

If you run an online store, then email marketing is the most effective tool to convert abandoned carts into paying customers.

For a long time, eCommerce giants have been effectively using email to convert casual visitors into buyers.

3. Email Newsletter for Non-Profits

Non-profit organizations need to reach out to their supporters for donations, support, events, and more. Other mediums like social media, phone, and physical mailing all cost a lot more money than email marketing.

Human Rights Watch newsletter signup form

Creating an email newsletter allows non-profits to stay in touch with the general public, supporters, and donors.

Users are more likely to open emails from a non-profit that they support. In fact, 49% of millennials prefer to get updates from the organizations they support via email.

To learn more, see this article on why email marketing is essential for non-profits.

4. Email Newsletter for Blogs and News Websites

If you want to start a blog or make a content-driven news site, then email marketing is the best way to build your audience. You will see that all popular internet marketers, influencers, and famous bloggers actively build their email lists.

Chris Brogan newsletter

Here is why:

  • You get to send email updates to users who would otherwise never return to your website again.
  • You build a steady audience of loyal readers without relying on third-party platforms like search and social media.
  • You don’t control search engines or social media. Your search rankings can drop and your social media profiles can get suspended for no reason. On the other hand, you own your email list and have complete freedom to use it.

5. Email Newsletters for Education

Educational institutions need support from an engaged community of students, faculty, parents, and local businesses. Whether it is for fundraising, admissions, events, or other activities; Email is the cheapest and most direct way for schools and colleges to reach out.

University of California newsletter signup form

These are just a few examples of how email newsletters can benefit businesses, individuals, and non-profits. There are many more examples out there, which is why most marketers believe that email marketing is crucial for being successful online.

That being said, let’s take a look at how you can easily start an email newsletter to grow your own business and brand.

Step 1. Starting an Email Newsletter

The most important thing you’ll need to start your email newsletter is an email marketing service provider. These are companies that allow you to collect email addresses and send mass emails.

There are literally hundreds of email marketing services in the world including Constant Contact, SendinBlue, AWeber, Drip, ConvertKit, and many more.

After trying out almost every popular email marketing service, we recommend our users to use Constant Contact. They are one of the most popular email marketing service providers in the world, and their support is great in helping people get started.

Constant Contact offers a beginner friendly email marketing platform with simple drag and drop tools to help you quickly get started. They also have advanced email list growth tools, marketing automation, eye catching templates, and more.

First, you need to visit the Constant Contact website and click on the signup button. They have a 60 day free trial (no credit card required).

Signup for Constant Contact

Once you click the button, it will bring you to the signup page where you need to provide the information to create your account.

Fill in the signup form

After you complete the signup, you will be redirected to Constant Contact guided set up. Click on the ‘Skip this step’ below as we will show you how to set it up later in this article.

You will now reach your Constant Contact dashboard. This is where you will manage your email lists, subscribers, and send your email newsletter.

Constant Contact dashboard

Note: Constant Contact free trial account only allows you to send up to 100 emails. You will need to purchase their paid plan to access all the powerful features. WPBeginner users can get a special 20% off when using our Constant Contact coupon code.

Step 2. Creating an Email List

An email list is basically a contact list of your subscribers. Think of it as a contact book containing email addresses of all the users who sign up to receive your email newsletter.

To keep your contacts organized, you need to create an email list.

Simply click on the ‘Contacts’ link from the top menu and then click on the Email List link in the sidebar.

Creating a new email list

This page will show all your email lists. By default, Constant Contact creates an email list for you labeled ‘General Interest’. You need to click on the ‘Enter a new list’ link to create a new email list.

Choose a name for your email list

You’ll be asked to enter a name for your list. You can enter anything here that helps you easily identify the list.

Next, click on the ‘Add list’ button, and Constant Contact will create the list for you.

Email list created

In order to start using this email list, you need at least one contact added to it. You can manually add a contact to your list by visiting the ‘Contacts’ page and clicking on the ‘Add Contacts’ button.

Add contact to your email list

This will show you a drop-down menu, asking how you would like to add contacts. You need to select ‘Type in one contact’ to continue.

On the next screen, you need to enter contact information. You can add one of your own email addresses here. This will allow you to test your email campaigns.

Adding a contact to your email list

After entering your contact information, click on the save button to add it. Your email list is now ready to be used.

Now that you have created an email list, it is time to set up some basic list settings.

Step 3. Setting up Your Email List Settings

The first thing you would want to set up is a welcome email. This is the email message sent to your users when they join your email newsletter.

Let’s get started.

First, you need to click on the ‘Campaigns’ link from the top menu and then click on the ‘Create’ button.

Create welcome email campaign

This will bring up a popup where you will be asked to select an email campaign type. Click on the ‘Email Automation’ to continue.

Email automation campaign

After that, you need to choose the email automation type. Click on the ‘Welcome email’ option to continue.

Select automated welcome email

Next, you will be asked to select a template for your email. The builder will automatically show you ‘Welcome email’ templates that you can use as a starting point.

Select welcome email template

Simply click on a template to select and open it in Constant Contact’s drag and drop email builder.

Creating welcome email

From here, you will design your welcome email newsletter template.

You can start by giving your campaign a proper title, this will help you identify the campaign when you need to edit or change it in the future.

Click on the ‘Untitled…’ link at the top left corner to edit it. Now enter a name for your campaign, for example, welcome email, new user signup, introduction, etc.

Campaign name

After that, you can start editing the email template. It is a drag-and-drop editor, so you can simply drag elements from the left column and drop them on the canvas. You can also point and click anywhere in the email to edit it.

Point and click to edit your welcome email

You can replace the logo with your own, add your own header image to match your branding, customize the email subject and message text to fit your needs.

Once you are satisfied with the design, click on ‘Save’ to store your email and then click the ‘Continue’ button.

The email builder will now ask you to select an email list. Go ahead and select the list you created in the earlier step. After that, fill out the physical address form.

Welcome email settings

Due to the anti-spam laws in many countries, you need to include physical address information in each newsletter email. This can be your business address or a P.O. box.

Lastly, click on the ‘Activate’ button at the top right corner of the screen to save and activate your welcome email.

Welcome email campaign set up

You have successfully set up a ‘Welcome email’ campaign. From now on, all new users joining your newsletter will receive this email upon sign up.

Some tips on writing an effective welcome email

Welcome emails have an average open rate of 50% which is higher than any other email newsletter you send.

It will be the first thing new subscribers will hear from you. This is your opportunity to impress them, so they look forward to your next email newsletter.

  • Say thanks and let your users know that you appreciate them sharing their contact information with you.
  • Next, you would want to introduce yourself, your business, and what you do. Keep it short and simple.
  • Let your users know how often you’ll email them and what kind of content and offers they should expect.
  • If you promised users an incentive to join your email list, then include that information in your welcome email.
  • The best way to introduce users to your brand is by sending them to the most useful content on your website. It helps them discover content and builds engagement.

For more tips, see this guide on how to write the perfect welcome email for new subscribers.

Step 4. Setting up Newsletter Signup Forms to Get More Subscribers

Now that you have signed up with an email marketing platform and set up your email list. It is time to start promoting it.

The easiest way to get more subscribers is by adding the newsletter sign up forms to your website. Usually, your email marketing service would have ready-made sign up forms that you can add to your website.

However, these signup forms don’t look good and sometimes don’t fit in the container where you want to place them.

Let’s take a look at how to easily add newsletter signup forms to your WordPress site. We will show you two methods, and you can choose one or both of them together.

1. Add Newsletter Signup Form Using WPForms Lite (Free)

WPForms is the best drag & drop WordPress from plugin in the market. They have a free version called WPForms lite which includes built-in support to connect with your Constant Contact account.

This allows you to use WPForms’ drag and drop form builder to create your newsletter sign up form.

The first thing you need to do is install and activate the WPForms Lite plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you need to visit WPForms » Settings page and click on the ‘Integrations’ tab.

WPForms integrations

You will see Constant Contact integration listed there. You need to click to expand it and then click on the ‘Add Account’ button.

This will show you the information needed to connect your Constant Contact account to WPForms. Click on the link that says ‘Click here to register with Constant Contact’.

Connect Constant Contact to WPForms

This will bring up a popup which will take you to the Constant Contact website. Click on the ‘Allow’ button to give WPForms access to your Constant Contact account.

Allow access

Next, you will see an authorization code which you need to copy.

Switch back to the WPForms settings page and enter the authorization code you copied earlier. You also need to provide a name for this integration.

Finally, click on the ‘Connect to Constant Contact’ button.

WPForms will now connect to your Constant Contact account. You will see a ‘Connected’ label appear next to the integration.

Once you are satisfied with the form, you need to click on the Marketing tab to integrate it with Constant Contact.

Step 6. Tips to Get More Email Subscribers

In 2018, the number of global e-mail users amounted to 3.8 billion users.

In another study, 48% of participants said that they would like to receive email updates from their favorite brands.

This means that users prefer to get emails from their favorite businesses. Now the only question that remains is how do you get them to subscribe to your newsletter?

Luckily, email marketing has been around for a very long time. Experts are regularly experimenting, sharing, and finding new ways to grow their email lists.

Here we will share some of our own tips that are tested and proven to work.

1. Use multiple signup forms

Many beginners just add a single newsletter signup form to their website and forget about it. Add multiple signup forms to your website using a variety of placements.

Multiple signup forms

However, you need to be careful not to ruin user experience with aggressive prompts to signup.

For example, in the screenshot above, the second prompt only appears when a user scrolls down and the first signup form is no longer visible.

Social Media Examiner uses multiple sign up forms and creative strategies which has helped them get over 250,000 email subscribers (case study).

Keep experimenting with different forms and placements to find out what gets you the best results.

2. Use lead magnets to capture more subscribers

Lead Magnets are special offers used as an incentive to join your email newsletter. These special offers could be an exclusive download, an ebook, a helpful resource, discount coupon, etc.

Lead Magnets work extremely well because they offer users instant gratification and value for performing an action.

You can see a live example of lead magnets just below this article, where we offer users a free download of our ultimate WordPress toolkit as an incentive.

Lead magnet example

3. Offer Content Upgrades

Similar to lead magnets, content upgrades offer users an additional piece of content or bonus content, which they can download after signing up for your newsletter.

You can easily add content upgrades to your existing content. This can be a checklist, a PDF download of the article, a case study, a research report, and more.

Content upgrade example

For more details, see our guide on how to add content upgrades in WordPress.

4. Use social media to grow your email list

Promoting newsletter on social media

Your website is not the only place to promote your newsletter and find new subscribers. Social media platforms can be another place to convert followers into email subscribers.

For detailed tips, see our guide on how to use social media to grow your email list

Step 7. How to Make Money from Email Newsletter

One of the popular sayings among digital marketers is that “The money is in the list”. Every dollar you spend on email marketing has a return average of $32 dollars.

As your subscriber count grows, you would want to explore opportunities to monetize your email newsletter.

Following are just some of the easiest ways to make money from your email newsletter.

1. Sell your products

Sell your own products

First, you would obviously want to use your email list to sell your own products. You can use your email list to send special offers and discount deals exclusive to your subscribers.

You can also bring them back to your website by adding calls to action, offer members-only content, demo, and free samples.

When trying to sell your own products, keep the ‘Value Value Value Pitch’ formula in your mind.

It basically suggests that you should offer three times more value than your sales pitch. Most marketers agree that such emails work better than those that are nothing more than a plain sales pitch.

2. Upsell products and services

Upselling is a sales technique to persuade customers into buying something additional like an upgrade or add-on. As your email list grows, you can send personalized offers to existing customers.

Upselling through email

Due to its highly targeted messaging and personalized offers, upsell emails tend to perform way better. This may lead many businesses to send more such emails.

You need to remember that your emails should offer value first, otherwise those emails would soon become annoying.

3. Affiliate marketing

affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is a referral program where an online retailer (advertiser) pays you a commission when users purchase their product using your referral link.

You can find products and services that might interest your users and add affiliate links, reviews, and coupons in your newsletter emails.

To get started, see our beginner’s guide to affiliate marketing.

4. Advertisement or renting out your email list

If your email list grows quickly, then you can make money by renting your email list.

You see, a lot of folks don’t realize the potential of email marketing until they realize that they could benefit immensely from an email list.

Lucky for you, they are now looking for someone who may already have a list of people interested in specific products, services, or industry.

You can approach such advertisers directly, or you can find email list brokers like Info USA, List Giant, or Mailing List Direct.

Step 8. Keep Your Newsletter Emails Out of Spam

How to make avoid ending up in spam

In 2012, 90% of all emails were spam. This number was reduced to 58% by the end of 2018.

The main reason for this decline was the improved spam detection and prevention technologies used by email marketing tools.

This is great news for all users and businesses. However, the AI-powered spam detection technologies are quite sensitive and can wrongfully mark your email messages as spam.

Following are the most common reasons for newsletter emails to end up in spam:

1. You didn’t use double opt-in

Basically, all email marketing services including Constant Contact require users’ consent for sending them emails. This is done by the user verifying their email address after signing up.

However, they also allow you to manually add email addresses. If you misuse this feature and add email addresses from random sources, then your messages will end up in spam.

2. Sender email address was used for spam

If your sender email address was used to send spam or malware, then your email campaigns with the same sender address will end up in spam. This is why you need to get a business email address to ensure high deliverability for your newsletter emails.

3. Misleading subject lines

Misleading email subjects are annoying and due to many users reporting such emails, spam algorithms can now identify many such lines and mark them spam.

Following are a couple of examples of common misleading subject lines.

  • Urgent: Update your information
  • Thanks for your order!
  • You have won a prize

Need some good examples? See these 160+ excellent email subject lines for inspiration.

4. Your email must have accurate information

The anti-spam laws in many countries require the sender to provide accurate from address (sender email address), complete physical address, and an unsubscribe link in the email message.

If any of these are missing from your newsletter email, then it would most likely end up in spam.

Basically, you need to follow the rules and guidelines provided by your email marketing software and you’ll be able to avoid the spam folder.

Mailchimp is one of the most popular email marketing service providers in the world primarily because they offer a forever free email marketing service plan.

Mailchimp comes with an easy email builder, autoresponders, segmenting contacts into groups, and simple tracking for analytics. It also allows you to setup delivery times based on user’s timezones, and you can setup segmenting based on geolocation.

You can easily integrate MailChimp with WordPress, Magento, Shopify, and many other platforms. If you are using WordPress, then see our ultimate guide to using Mailchimp and WordPress for detailed instructions.

When it comes to marketing automation features, Mailchimp platform is quite limited when compared to other providers in our list such as Drip or ConvertKit.

In the recent years, Mailchimp has attempted to add many of the “advanced” features, but having tested many of these, they’re not truly advanced.

Mailchimp support is offered by email, live chat, and a large tutorials knowledge-base.

Mailchimp offers a forever free plan which allows you to send 12,000 emails for up to 2,000 subscribers. This plan is fairly limited because you don’t features like send-time optimization, advanced segmentation, multi-variate testing, etc. You are also required to display their branding in your email. Last but not least, support is restricted to email only, and you may find it not as helpful.

Their paid plans start from $10/month for up to 500 subscribers, and the pricing increases in the increment of 500 subscribers.
