7 Call to Action (CTA) Best Practices for Guaranteed Landing Page Conversions

Did you know that up to 70% of businesses fail to include an effective CTA (call to action) in their marketing?

Unfortunately, when it comes to landing pages, most visitors won’t take action without a clear nudge in the right direction.

I’ve spent years helping businesses create landing pages that convert, and I’ve learned that a well-written CTA can make the biggest difference in turning someone from a casual visitor into a paying customer.

Since effective CTAs drive conversions on your WordPress website or online store, they need to be laser-focused and inspire immediate action.

In this article, I will list the CTA best practices to follow for guaranteed landing page conversions.

Note: This is a guest post by John Turner, the co-founder of SeedProd, the best landing page builder plugin. We publish an expert column on WPBeginner every Thursday. This is an invite-only column, meaning we don’t accept unsolicited guest post offers.

Call to Action (CTA) Best Practices for Guaranteed Landing Page Conversions

I will cover quite a few topics in this post. Here’s a handy list so you can jump to the section you are most interested in:

1. Add a Single CTA Per Page to Show the User a Clear Path Forward

Let’s start with the most important CTA best practice. Typically, you should only have only one call to action on a page.

If you want to move your WordPress website visitors to take action, then you need to be crystal clear on what that action is and state it clearly.

Avoid the temptation to add multiple calls to action to a landing page. This can confuse your readers, and they may have difficulty deciding between the options.

This is known as choice paralysis. When faced with multiple choices, a person may hesitate because they are not sure which option is best. The best way to move forward isn’t clear.

In my experience, only having one CTA per page will have more impact on increasing conversions than anything else. In fact, limiting your landing page to a single CTA can increase clicks by over 371% and grow sales by a huge 1,617%.

So, make sure you include a single, clear call to action. This presents a straightforward path for the user to move forward, resulting in more conversions. Or, if you have a long page and want to include multiple calls to action, then make sure that they have the same CTA message.

2. Use Strong and Compelling Language to Drive Action

If you want your visitors to act on your CTA, then you need to use actionable language that clearly tells them what they need to do next.

That means using strong action verbs, such as ‘get’, ‘start’, ‘shop’, ‘download’, and ‘subscribe’.

I find that action verbs convey a sense of confidence and authority. They tell users what you want them to do in a clear and assertive way.

Here are a few good examples of action-packed CTAs:

  • Get Exclusive Access
  • Start Saving Today
  • Shop New Arrivals
  • Download Your Free Guide
  • Subscribe for Free Updates

Make sure you keep your CTAs short and sweet so they are easy to scan and digest. ‘Get a free reader’ is a great example of a short, action-oriented CTA from Square.

Example of a CTA That Uses Action Language

Wherever possible, you should also use urgency or scarcity language. This offers a powerful incentive for the user to take action now:

  • Claim Your Discount Before It’s Gone
  • Hurry, Limited Time Offer!
  • Don’t Miss Out on This Deal!
  • Reserve Your Spot Now (limited availability)

Always be creative and customize your call to action to the specific campaign. Compared with vague, generic CTAs, customized CTAs convert 42% more visitors.

3. Use Benefit-Driven Language to Incentivize the User

Using benefit-driven CTAs with emotional language can create a desire that motivates the user to actually act.

When crafting your call to action, you will want to make sure you briefly highlight the benefits you are offering and explain what the users will gain by taking action. If they can see what’s in it for them, then they will be more motivated to click.

To do this well, you need to understand what motivates your target audience and you may want to use benefit-driven verbs like ‘unlock’, ‘discover’, ‘boost’, and ‘save’.

Let’s say that your current CTA simply says ‘Download Now’. This lets your users know what to do but doesn’t offer any motivation.

A better call to action would be ‘Download Your Free Guide Today’. This highlights the benefit and adds urgency.

Another example is Aura’s landing page. They use the benefit-driven CTA ‘Get Protection Now’.

Example of a Benefit-Driven CTA

Notice the words just above the call to action. They support the CTA by mentioning another benefit of saving 70% and the word ‘today’ adds urgency. I will show you how you can strengthen your CTA with supporting copy later in this article.

Here are some more examples of benefit-driven CTAs you can use as inspiration:

  • Unlock Exclusive Discounts
  • Boost Your Productivity
  • Save Big Today
  • Build Your Skills

When you incorporate benefit-driven language like this, you speak directly to the user’s needs and desires. This transforms your CTA from an instruction into a compelling invitation.

4. Place Your CTA on a Button for More Clicks

Placing your CTA on a button is a simple way to boost conversions. A button is highly noticeable, easy to customize, and clearly wants to be clicked.

Studies show that this works well. In fact, a company called Copyblogger reported a significant 45% increase in clicks when they switched to CTAs in the shape of a button.

You can easily add a call to action button to your landing pages using the WordPress block editor or a page builder plugin.

For example, SeedProd templates let you create landing pages easily and already contain a call to action button. It’s also super easy to customize its color, text, and appearance to match your campaign.

Before we move to my next point, I want to share my favorite tip about making your CTA buttons more effective. Studies show that buttons with an arrow icon at the end can increase conversions by a further 26%.

You can see in the screenshot below that we do this on our own website. We also add a sense of urgency by using the word ‘Now’.

Example of a CTA Button With an Arrow

Notice that we made the button more visible by using a contrasting color and placing it in multiple locations. That brings us to our next point.

5. Create Highly Visible CTA Buttons That Get Noticed

It goes without saying that no one will click a button they don’t see. Luckily, there are lots of ways to make your call to action unmissable.

The best way to make your CTA button stand out is to use a bright color that contrasts with the color scheme of your landing page. Make sure the button text is large and readable.

You will find simple settings to do this in the block editor and landing page plugins like SeedProd.

Customizing a CTA Button in SeedProd

Try different sizes and positions to see what looks best. Plus, make sure you place the button high enough on the page that your visitors don’t have to scroll before they see it.

If you created a long-form landing page, then it’s important to place your call to action at intervals throughout the page. This will make sure that your readers can always see the call to action as they scroll down the page and you will also reinforce its message.

I also like to get the maximum clicks from my CTA buttons by making them accessibility-friendly. You can add alt text to the CTA button to make it visible to people using screen readers. That’s 7 million users in the United States alone.

6. Support Your CTA With Extra Landing Page Copy

Because the copy of a good CTA button is short and focused, you will need to reinforce the value it offers with some extra text on the landing page.

This shouldn’t be too long and should appear near the call to action. Here’s a great example from the OptinMonster website.

Example of Supporting Copy for a CTA

Notice their supporting copy ‘Watch the video’ appears right under the CTA button. Video content works well on landing pages because it provides helpful information without complicating the page with too much extra written content.

You will need to make sure that any supporting copy is consistent with the CTA. This will create a seamless user experience that reinforces the message of your call to action.

For example, let’s say you decided on this benefit-focused CTA button:

Then the supporting text could say ‘Claim your limited-time discount of 15% off’, and the page title might say ‘Black Friday Week 15% Off Everything’.

By keeping your landing page copy short and simple, you can keep the focus on your call to action and maximize conversions.

7. Use A/B Testing and Analytics to Improve Your CTA

Finally, I recommend testing different calls to action to discover the best variation for your website. You can try changing up the wording, using different colors and shapes, and experimenting with button placement.

To measure which CTA version works best, you will need to perform A/B split testing. This is where you create different versions of your call to action and other landing page elements to test how they affect user behavior.

Just remember to test only two versions of your CTA at a time to make sure the measurements are accurate and helpful. This will let you see clearly if one button style works better than the other or which CTA copy gets the most attention.

View test results

For example, a company called Unbounce did split testing on two very similar calls to action. The first said ‘Start your free 30-day trial’ and the second ‘Start my free 30-day trial’. They were surprised to learn there was a 90% increase in click-through rate with such a small change in the second version.

You can try similar experiments with different CTAs on your website. You may not see a 90% improvement, but you can test CTA variations to see which one works better.

I also like to use an analytics solution or heatmap tool to monitor the on-page behavior of my website visitors. This shows me what my users do before they click the CTA and gives me ideas on optimizing my landing page and call to action button.

I hope these insights help you understand some CTA best practices so you can grow your landing page conversions. You may also want to see these WPBeginner guides on how to create a WooCommerce popup to increase sales or the best social proof plugins for WordPress.

How to Easily Add CSS Animations in WordPress

Do you want to add CSS animations in WordPress?

Animations are a great way to grab the visitor’s attention and highlight a page’s most important content. They can also encourage customers to click on your call-to-action buttons and links.

In this article, we will show you how you can easily add CSS animations in WordPress.

How to easily add CSS animations in WordPress

Why Add CSS Animations in WordPress?

You can use CSS animations to draw the visitor’s attention to different parts of a page. For example, if you have an online store then animations can highlight a product’s most important features or biggest selling points.

Animations will also make your CTAs stand out, which can help you reach a specific goal such as getting more people to subscribe to your email newsletter.

You can add CSS animations to your theme or child theme‘s stylesheet. However, this takes a lot of time and effort, and it can break your website’s design and even function if you make a mistake.

With that being said, let’s see how you can easily add CSS animations to your WordPress site. If you prefer to jump straight to a particular method, then you can use the links below.

Method 1. How to Easily Animate Any WordPress Block (Quick and Easy)

The easiest way to add a simple CSS animation is by using Blocks Animation.

This free plugin allows you to add an entrance animation to any block without having to write a single line of CSS. It also has a typing animation and a ticker-style effect that you can add to text and numbers.

A count animation, created using the Animation Blocks plugin

First, you’ll need to install and activate the plugin. If you need help, then please see our guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, open any page or post in the WordPress editor. Then, simply click on the block that you want to animate and select the ‘Block’ tab in the right-hand menu.

You’ll see this menu has a new ‘Animations’ section.

How to animate any WordPress block

Simply click to expand the ‘Animations’ section, and you’ll see three different options: Animations, Count Animations, and Typing Animations.

‘Animations’ are short effects that play once when the page loads. To add this kind of entrance animation to your WordPress blog, just click on the dropdown next to ‘Animation.’

Adding a CSS animation to WordPress using a free plugin

This opens a menu where you can choose the animation you want to use.

The WordPress editor will show a preview of the animation, so you can try different options to see what looks the best.

Adding loading animations to WordPress

By default, the entrance animation will play as soon as the page loads, but you can add a delay if you prefer. If you use multiple animations on the same page, then you can even use delays to stagger your animations so they’re not overwhelming.

Simply open the ‘Delay’ dropdown and choose a time from the list.

How to add loading CSS animations to WordPress

You can also make the animation faster or slower using the ‘Speed’ dropdown.

As you’re trying different settings, you can preview the animation at any point by clicking on ‘Replay Animation.’

Previewing CSS animations in WordPress

The plugin also has ‘Count Animations’ and ‘Typing Animations.’

Typing Animations allow you to animate text, while Count Animations add a ticker-style effect to numbers. These animations work with any block that supports text or numbers, so you can use them to animate buttons, image captions, headings, and more.

To add either of these effects, start by highlighting the text or numbers that you want to animate. Then, click on the downward arrow in the small toolbar.

Adding a typing animation to a text block

You can now choose ‘Count Animations’ or ‘Typing Animations’ from the dropdown menu.

If these options are grayed out, then make sure you’ve highlighted the right content. For example, you won’t be able to select ‘Count Animation’ if you’ve only highlighted text.

Creating typing animations with a WordPress plugin

After adding the animation, you can change the speed and add an optional delay using the dropdown menus in the small popup.

For example, in the following image, we’re using a delay of one second.

Adding a typing animation to WordPress

When you’re ready to make the CSS animation live, either click on the ‘Publish’ or ‘Update’ button. Now, if you visit your WordPress website you’ll see the animation live.

Method 2. How to Add CSS Animations to Custom Pages (Recommended)

If you want to add simple animations to the built-in WordPress blocks, then Blocks Animation is a good choice. However, if you want to really grab the visitor’s attention, keep people on your website, and get more conversions then we recommend using SeedProd.

SeedProd is the best page builder plugin that allows you to create beautiful landing pages, sales pages, and more using a simple drag-and-drop editor.

It also comes with an ‘Animated Headline’ block that you can use to create rotating and highlighted animated headlines.

An animated headline created using SeedProd

Despite the name, you can use the Animated Headline block to animate any text including a call to action, subheading, or any other text that you want to emphasize.

SeedProd also comes with over 40 entrance animations that you can add to any block including images, text, buttons, videos, and more.

SeedProd entrance animations

You can even animate entire sections and columns with just a few clicks. In this way, you can create engaging animated pages within minutes.

If you’re using animations to get more conversions and sales, then SeedProd integrates with WooCommerce and supports many of the top email marketing services you may already be using to promote your website.

How to Setup the SeedProd Page Builder

The first thing you need to do is install and activate SeedProd. For more details, see our step-by-step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you need to enter your license key.

SeedProd license key

You can find this information under your account on the SeedProd website. After adding the license key, simply click on ‘Verify Key.’

Create a Custom Page Design

To get started, go to SeedProd » Landing Pages and click on ‘Add New Landing Page.’

Creating a new landing page with SeedProd

On the next screen, you’ll be asked to choose a template.

SeedProd comes with over 180 beautiful templates that are organized into different categories such as 404-page templates and custom WooCommerce ‘thank you’ pages.

For this guide, we’ll show you how to create a sales page with animated text and entrance animations, but the steps will be similar no matter what kind of page you create.

Simply click on any tab to see the different templates within that category.

The SeedProd template library

When you find a template you want to use, just hover your mouse over it and then click on the checkmark icon.

We’re using the ‘Zen Sales Page’ template in all our images, but you can use any template.

Selecting a sales template in SeedProd

Next, you need to give the page a title.

SeedProd will automatically create a URL based on the page title, but you can change this to anything you want. For example, adding relevant keywords to a URL can often improve your WordPress SEO and help the page appear in relevant search results.

To learn more, please see our guide on how to do keyword research for your WordPress blog.

When you’re happy with the title and URL, click on ‘Save and Start Editing the Page.’

Adding a title to a custom page design

This will load the SeedProd drag-and-drop page editor.

On the right, you’ll see a live preview of the page design, with some settings on the left.

The SeedProd page editor

SeedProd comes with lots of blocks that you can add to your design, including blocks that allow you to add social share buttons, videos, contact forms, and more.

For more information, please see our guide on how to create a custom page in WordPress.

How to Add Animated Text to WordPress

To add some animated text to the page, find the Animated Headline block and drag it onto your page design.

The SeedProd Animated Headline block

There are two ways to animate your headline. First, the ‘Highlighted’ style adds a shape animation to your text, such as a circle or an underlined zigzag.

You can use this animation to draw attention to a particular word or phrase inside the headline. This can make your headline easier to read and understand by highlighting the most important content. It’s also a great way to draw attention to a call to action.

Adding a CSS animation to a headline in WordPress

The Highlighted style also has a few strikethrough shapes.

You can use strikethroughs to create interesting and eye-catching effects, or it can simply add some fun to your design.

A strikethrough animation created with SeedProd

To create a Highlighted animation, just open the ‘Style’ dropdown and select ‘Highlighted.’

Next, open the ‘Shape’ dropdown and choose a shape. When you click on a shape, SeedProd will show a preview of that animation, so you can try different shapes to see which one you like the most.

A curly CSS animation created with SeedProd

SeedProd also has a ‘Rotating’ animation style, which adds a transition effect to the text.

Often, animated text is the first thing visitors look at when a page loads, so it’s a great way to highlight the most important piece of text.

To create a transition animation, simply open the ‘Style’ dropdown and click on ‘Rotating.’

You can then open the ‘Animation’ dropdown and choose the type of transition you want to use, such as fade, zoom, or roll. Again, SeedProd will play the animation inside the page editor so you can try different effects to see which you prefer.

A transition animation in WordPress

No matter whether you’re creating a ‘Highlighted’ or ‘Rotating’ animation, you can add text before and after the animated text.

Simply type into the ‘Before Headline’ and ‘After Headline’ fields. In the ‘Text’ field, add the word or phrase that you want to animate.

If you want to animate the whole headline, then simply leave the ‘Before Headline’ and ‘After Headline’ fields empty.

Animating an entire headline in WordPress

By default, SeedProd will play the animation on a loop, which some visitors may find annoying.

To only play the animation once, click to deactivate the ‘Infinite Loop’ switch.

Disabling the infinite loop animation settings

By default, the animation will play for 1200 milliseconds after an 8000 milliseconds delay.

To use different values, type into the ‘Duration’ and ‘Delay’ fields. For example, you can make the animation faster by using a shorter duration.

Changing the animation duration

You may also want to style the text. For example, you can change the font size and alignment.

When you’re happy with how the animated headline looks, go ahead and click on the ‘Save’ button to store your changes.

Saving a CSS animation in WordPress

Add Entrance Animations in WordPress

Entrance animations play when the page first loads, so they’re a great way to catch the visitor’s attention.

You can also use them to highlight the content visitors should look at first. For example, if you have an online marketplace then you might animate the product’s hero image, or the banner advertising your Black Friday sale.

Inside the SeedProd editor, simply click on the content you want to animate, and then select the ‘Advanced’ tab in the left-hand menu.

Adding entrance animations using SeedProd

You can then go ahead and click to expand the ‘Animation Effects’ section.

After that, simply choose an animation from the ‘Entrance Animation’ dropdown.

Adding entrance animations using SeedProd

You can now add entrance animations to any block, section, or column simply by following the same process described above.

Publish Your CSS Animations in WordPress

When you’re happy with how the page is set up, click the dropdown menu on the ‘Save’ button and select ‘Publish.’

How to Add Multi-Column Content in WordPress Posts (No HTML Required)

Do you want to add multi-column content to your WordPress posts?

Columns can be used to create engaging layouts for your posts and pages. They make it easier for you to organize your content. They can also improve readability as your website visitors quickly scan the text.

In this article, we will show you how to easily add multi-column content to your WordPress posts without writing any HTML code.

Why Add Multi-Column Content in WordPress?

Traditional print media, like newspapers and magazines, have been using multi-column layouts since the very early days of printing.

Their goal was to make it easier for users to read the smaller text while utilizing the available space economically.

Single-column layouts are more commonly used on the web. However, multi-column grids are still useful for highlighting content and making it easier to scan and read.

For example, if you run a magazine website, then you can use a multi-column layout to organize your content. It will give it the same feel as you would find in a physical magazine.

Organizing your content in multiple columns is also helpful if you are publishing comparisons, research papers, and other interactive content on your WordPress website. It helps improve readability and boost engagement.

That said, let’s see how you can add multi-column content in the block and classic editor. You can simply click the links below to jump ahead to the method you want to use:

Adding Multi-Column Content in WordPress Block Editor – The Easy Way

Creating multi-column content, also known as grid column content in WordPress, is now easy because it is a default feature. The WordPress Block Editor includes a Columns block.

To add a multi-column layout, you need to create a new post or edit an existing one. Once you are in the content editor, click on the ‘+’ icon at the top to add a block.

Next, you need to select the Columns block in the ‘Design’ tab.

Add a column block

Next, you will need to select the number of columns and layouts you would like to use for your blog post.

WordPress will show you different options to choose from. For example, you can pick a 50/50 column layout, use a 33/66 layout, and more.

Choose number of columns to add

After choosing a layout, you can add blocks to your columns. The Columns block allows you to add blocks inside each column.

For example, you can select the Paragraph block and add content to it.

You will also be able to see the block settings in the right column of the post-edit screen in the settings panel. Here, you can edit the width of the columns.

In addition to the text, you can also add images and embed videos in WordPress columns.

Simply take the mouse to one of the columns, and click the ‘+’ button to add a block. You can also add a block by typing ‘/’ and then the block name.

For example, we added an image in one column and some text in the other column.

Adding Multiple Columns in Old WordPress Classic Editor

If you haven’t upgraded your WordPress to Gutenberg and are still using the Classic Editor, then you will need to install a separate plugin for creating a grid column layout.

First, install and activate the Column Shortcodes plugin. For detailed instructions, follow our step-by-step guide on how to install a plugin in WordPress.

Upon activation, you can create a new post or edit an old one. Once you are in the classic editor, simply click on the ‘[ ]’ button in the toolbar.

Click the shortcode buttons

The plugin will now show you a list of column shortcodes for your blog post.

You can choose any layout you would like to add to your WordPress blog. There are also options to edit the column padding.

Select shortcode for columns

Once you have selected a shortcode, it will automatically appear in the classic editor. For instance, we picked the ‘one half’ shortcode for this tutorial.

You can then enter your content between the shortcodes.

Enter your text between column shortcodes

Next, you can click the shortcode icon ‘[ ]’ again to add another column shortcode.

Let’s add the ‘one half (last)’ shortcode to show two columns next to each other. From here, you just need to add your content to the other column.

Enter text for second column and publish post

After that, you can preview your post and publish it.
