Suggestion: collapsible hierarchical comments on posts.

This actually started (in a convo with Dani) as a simple idea of just upvoting comments made to posts, buuut I quickly got ideas for turning comments into a sort-of Reddit-style thread system, where comments could be collapsed so the original general idea of the forum thread could be viewed.

I'd also suggested a user display setting to collapse comment threads by default, but Dani brought up a conflicting idea that if someone made a comment saying some post was wrong or something, users who collapse comments by default wouldn't see it.

personally, while this is valid, the responsibility is on the user to expand the comments on the post
but to add, a following post explaining a mistake or such should be made regardless <_<
I'm sure people wouldn't do that, but I don't believe that should be a reason of detrament for such an idea
I mean heck, StackExchange has collapsed comments, and I haven't seen many complaints there

but anyways, I just wanted to suggest for some better functionality for this place :)

I’m away for awhile

I went to Disney World for Thanksgiving break, and all those germs got to me, and I now have bronchitis. On top of it, my laptop (the only computer I have here in California) suffered from battery swell, and needs to have its battery replaced, which means that the Apple store is holding onto it for 5 days. Im now sick and without a computer for the upcoming week.

Here are some top topics recommended just for you recommends deleted thread

Long Title: "Here are some top topics recommended just for you" email recommends a thread deleted two months ago.

"what are the feature of window 10" was in my email and that looks to have been removed two months ago. As a moderator I can get to it but is the code behind this in need of a little update to not recommend content that was removed? What about folk that don't have this superpower?

I'll forward this email back to you via email with comment.

In short:

  1. Received email from DW on 11/20/2019.
  2. Thought I'd read an item but discover it was apparently removed 2 months ago.

For a moderator, if this is how it works I won't complain (this is not complaining.) But if this happens to others they may wonder.

Pretty printing code on mobile

Before anyone files a bug report, we are no longer pretty printing (using javascript to add line numbers & color coding) code snippets when on mobile browsers for performance reasons. It's not that it was particularly non-performant on mobile. It's rather just that I'm working hard to improve performance across a variety of devices, and I felt like it wasn't worth the trade-off, given it's an extra second or so of javascript parsing in exchange for making code not all that much more readable when on a mobile device.

Commenting bug /error

When clicking on commenting icon thats attached to post with quotation of other post, new window pops up letting us comment on tthe quoted post, not the post thats an answer to quoted post. Shouldnt be like this.

Upgraded servers

Sorry for the intermittent downtime over the past few days. We think we were being DDOS'ed, perhaps unclear.

However, we've upgraded to new web servers tonight, to bring HTTP/2 support and finally move from PHP 5.x to PHP 7. A few years late, I know.

Let me know if anything isn't working as it should!

Some feedback on the design

Hi all,
I haven't used the forum for a while so lot of the functionalities are new to me and I have to admit I found some of them really counter intuitive/annoying.

For a start, the way to reply to threads, that "Reply to this topic" button at the bottom that then turns into a small window which is incredibly annoying. Yes you can press esc and that turns into a full window but there you lose all the formatting options (code, quote etc): why can't we hav a normal full size window with all the options to reply to a thread as a default?
Then I tried to edit a post after I replied: I couldn't find an edit button to do so, that's extremely annoying and frustrating, where, if any, is the edit button?!
EDIT: about the edit button: I discovered that it's there, only it only appears at the bottom of the page so to see it you have to scroll all the way to the bottom first before thrying to edit something, still annoying, but less than what I first believed...

There might be more things, I will add when I discover them.
cheers

New impact stat in member profiles

Member profiles now have a new statistic that measures impact. It counts how many people the user has reached. It should be noted that we just started calculating this number earlier this year, so at this time, the highest number is roughly one million.
