WPMU DEV 2019 Q3 Roadmap Roundup…It’s Getting Better all the Time

We’ve reached the 7th edition of our Quarterly Roadmap Roundup, and it’s crazy to see the massive growth we’ve experienced in just two short years since launching the public-facing roadmap.

Of course, you can view the progress we are making on your favorite plugins and services at any time, but we stop to look ahead, share the highlights, and get your feedback each quarter.

“Why?” you ask.

  1. There are a ton of reasons, but topping the list are:
Because you’re busy and we want to make sure you’re getting the most out of all the special features that come with each new release.
  2. It is a perfect opportunity to get your feedback and suggestions for the future. What are you excited about? What features would make running a WordPress site even better?
  3. And because you’ve trusted us with 1.2 million websites for image compression, blazing-fast page speeds, total site protection, dedicated hosting, and 24/7 live support…we want to make sure you are prepared when things change and/or improve.

So, before we look at what we have planned for Q3, let’s see how we delivered on our Q2 goals. We didn’t just hit our goals; we went flying past them:

  • Defender, SmartCrawl, and Hustle all got new features, brand white labeling, new settings, and a UI upgrade.
  • Hummingbird includes mobile-first performance reporting and improvements to her cache suite.
  • And the beta tag has officially been removed from our dedicated hosting option.

And this is where our devs crushed it:

  • Smush now has bulk image restore, more control over what images are optimized, Multisite subsite settings, improved Lazy Loading, background image compression, and free users can now compress images up to 5MB (used to be 1MB).
  • Forminator becomes the first and only free form plugin to offer payments and calculations. Now you can sell products, make registration forms with a payment option, or take donations with the included Stripe and PayPal integrations.
  • Integrated Video Tutorials now lets you add and embed your own custom videos in the WordPress dashboard alongside our +40 included WordPress tutorials. Plus we’ve made it so you can select what user role is able to manage video settings.
  • The Hub now includes a Secure Single Sign-On option for quickly logging on to any of the hundreds of sites you manage. Save. So. Much. Time.

When you installed your first WPMU DEV plugin, opened your first support ticket, or synced your first website to The Hub, you knew it would make it better… but I bet you didn’t realize it would *keep* getting better.

All of these updates are available now! So…if you’re not a member yet, get started now, your first 30-days are free.

Now let’s look to the future!!!

I’m not a fortune teller, but as you can see, the Roadmap Roundup has been 110% accurate lately. Here’s what we hope to share with you over the next few months.

WPMU DEV Hosting roadmap

Hosting 1.0.1 (Is that even a thing?)

We don’t really have semantic versioning for our hosting. But as you already know, we are confident our hosting experience is more than ready for both your business and client sites.

It combines our years of enterprise hosting, speed optimization, security hardening, growth, and maintenance automation to our dedicated servers, customized for WordPress.

But we’ve been collecting your feedback, and the final touches are on there way including simplified email forwarding, better live stats, bulk plans built with agencies in mind, and continued polishing…followed by a huge marketing push.

Active Unlimited members currently get 3 sites included with their membership as long as they stay a member. But that is not going to last forever, so lock it in while you can.

If you’ve already tried hosting, tell us what you love and what we can add to take it to the next level in the comments.

Hummingbird 2.1

Hummingbird featured image

Besides image optimization, caching is the single best way to improve site speed. That’s why we’re making the best cache plugin for WordPress even better.

We’re adding support for OPcache, Varnish, and other popular cache tools. We’re adding page cache pre-load, so users get the speed benefits on every visit. And we’re adding the ability to serve compressed cache files for even more speed.

But that’s not all. Set Cache to work the way you want it to. Exclude cookies from being cached and turn off mobile caching. Plus automatically clear the cache on a post when someone leaves a comment.

Make sure users are always getting the latest updates with global asset cache flush from the Hub and schedule automatic clearing on a schedule.

Speed up any site on any host including SiteGround and WP Engine. Hummingbird is queen when it comes to performance optimization for WordPress.

Branda 3.2

Branda Roadmap Roundup feature image

If you’re not familiar with Branda, it is the ultimate white label tool for customizing the WordPress login screen, quickly setting-up coming soon and maintenance pages and branding the dashboard.

This upgrade is all about user permissions for both single sites and Multisite networks. With 3.2, it’s not just administrators with Branda access. Set which roles can access and manage Branda’s modules.

Branda has always worked with Multisite, but now you’ll be able to manage modules on every subsite separately and import/export subsite settings to back up or quickly move settings around your network. Create a template and add custom branding to every site in seconds.

SmartCrawl 2.4

SEO Audit - SmartCrawl SEO Plugin

Great SEO is about following best practices, and SmartCrawl adds everything you need to easily do professional-grade SEO on your WordPress site, including recommendations and automation.

In this version of SmartCrawl, we’re adding the ability to quickly edit your robots.txt file so you can make it easier for search engines to crawl and share your most important content.

WPMU DEV Dashboard Plugin 4.7.4

WPMU DEV Dashboard Plugin Roadmap Image

Our products are used on sites around the globe and translated into over 50 languages. That is great news.

But managing the language settings for each of your plugins and themes can be quite time-consuming. We are making language selection for our products a one-click setting that can be synced across all our plugins on your website. Set your language of choice and your plugins and themes will be updated automatically.

No more jumping from settings page to settings page sorting out translations.

Shipper 1.1

Shipper Roadmap Featured Image

Moving a site from host-to-host has never been easier with Shipper. It syncs your servers and automates the whole process. But with so many configurations and slooowww 3rd-party servers to contend with, we are adding more simple migration options.

Shipper will soon allow you to package your site into a .zip file and provide you with an installer.php. All you gotta do is download both files, upload them to your destination server via FTP/SFTP, and run the installer.php file to complete the migration.

But what if you don’t want to move your full site? Shipper will soon allow users to filter out files, folders, DB tables and much more.

Finally, we’re adding a white label tool for customizing the successful and failed notification migration emails. Perfect for when you’re working on client sites and want to send something a little more, *ahem* professional.

Poppin’ Conference Swag and Giveaways People Want

In just a few short weeks over 3000 WordPress fans like ourselves will descend on Berlin, Germany for WCEU to network, connect, celebrate, learn, and of course, collect bags and bags of swag!

We’re proud sponsors of this mega WordCamp and as such our super design team was pumped to break from digital design for a short moment to create physical goods. As a distributed team, it’s not often that we get our hands on tangible WPMU DEV swag or get to hug Devman.

But our team is showing up in force (+30 WPMU DEVians) including Devman himself. Needless to say, it’s been a massive organizational undertaking.

So how does a software company put together physical products for promotional giveaways? How do you even print swag for international events when you don’t have an office nearby?

Whether you are an online company trying to find branded products for a social giveaway or prepping swag for your next meetup, this post is for you. We’re gonna share our favorite services and, for our WCEU attendees, tease at what to expect when you stop by our booth – swag, giveaways, and more.

Stickers, Stickers, and more Stickers

In the 80’s I had a sticker book jammed with Garbage Pail Kids, scratch’n’sniff fruit, and transformer dye cuts. Today my laptop is adorned with Devman’s face, the WordPress logo, a cactus designed specially for my local camp, and cuddly Wappu’s from around the globe.

In my wildest dreams, I’d never imaged the ease of churning out stickers. Thank you, Sticker Mule!

Of course, we’re running off thousands of their custom vinyl stickers, but early in January I did a small run of 30 for a family event and was surprised at how affordable it was. No crazy setup fees or ridiculous minimums.

For your event (large or small), a special gift for the office, or a creative ‘thank you’ note to your clients, stickers are a big hit.

Pro tip: Sign up for the Sticker Mule newsletter. They regularly run 10 for $1 promotions here, and weekly deals here for customers worldwide.

Been There. Done That. Got the T-Shirt

True story. I was wearing a WPMU DEV Wapuu shirt at a coffee shop last week and my barista asked if I could get him one… so I took it off and gave it to him, right then and there. Ok I gave him one I had at home. But anyway, our swag is winning me points with my barista.

Everybody likes a t-shirt. Even if every other booth is giving out t-shirts, people want to rep your brand. It also helps that we have superhero mascots. Who doesn’t want a shirt with Hummingbird on it?

Depending on quantity, cut, and design t-shirts are very affordable. The trick is factoring in shipping. Most often the hurdle we’ve faced when printing new items for global events is in coordinating shipping. For this, we’ve ended up working with printers around the world to find a printer on the right side of the pond.

But what about a social media giveaway where swag is included? Set up a Printful account. It’s a bit more expensive, but they’ll print and ship quality one-off branded merch to our winners. It’s like having your own in-house screenprinter and distribution center. No storage unit or trips to the post office needed. We can give everyone on our marketing team access to a single account and can even set up a company store.

If t-shirts are too cliché, try a pillowcase, coffee mug, or beanbag chair. Printful has some fun and unique options on-hand to get your creative wheel spinning.

The Grand Prize!!!

We all want to be seen and heard. To get the attention of the masses, whether at a WordCamp or on social media, a charismatic spiel and the right grand prize will go a long way when it comes to growing your mailing list, social following, leads, and (fingers crossed) your member base.

No pressure!

Here are a couple of things to consider when putting the right package together:

  • How will the winner get this home? Something BIG is always fun but could be a huge pain for people traveling to the event… or more than double your budget with shipping costs. Be mindful.
  • Will it attract and convert the right audience? Drawing a big crowd doesn’t always mean more conversions.
  • Would I want it? Ideally you are so in tune with your users, if you’d want to take it home, they would want to take it home. If you’d stop and drop your business card in the jar for a chance to win, chances are, other interested parties would too.
  • What should I ask for in return? If you make it difficult for people to enter your giveaway you’ll likely get fewer entries… but the entries you get will probably be higher quality leads. If your goal is social proof and a huge following you can enter people with a simple like and share… for a more grandiose gift built to attract quality leads, don’t be afraid to raise the bar.
  • Am I having fun yet? People love free stuff. We like to overthink everything so if planning a giveaway is stressing you out…relax. At the end of the day, people will remember your brand’s generosity, excellent service, awesome product, and amazing support.

Flaunt it Like You’ve got It

A great prize will only get you so far. I mean, how will people know about your epic grand giveaway without a little flare? For a social campaign a video goes a long way. It doesn’t even have to be overproduced. Your phones video recorder can produce Hollywood quality magic.

And here’s a production tip from an old video nerd. Put a second phone in your shirt pocket to capture audio when a lapel mic is not around. It doesn’t take much to make yourself look and sound like such a kween!

“Step one – make sure people see my giveaway… got it”

If you’re feeling a little extra and want to help the global economy you could outsource a flashy design for your giveaway on UpWork.

Of course, our super design team has been tasked with some neck turning designs for our physical WCEU event booth including this rad coloring book you can download and print off for yourself if you’re feeling frisky.

But the showstopper for us has always been photo ops with the actual Devman himself. If he’s not at the booth just look for his entourage, he’s always drawing a crowd.

Refer Your Way to a WPMU DEV Lifetime Membership

We’ve heralded our disdain for affiliate programs for years, swearing them off for good. And yet, here I am, with a bold announcement… WPMU DEV affiliates are back and better than ever.

It’s been a dream to reimagine our rewards system in a way that protects the integrity of the web and honors our tens of thousands of faithful Devians and superfans.

The Struggle is Real!

Incentivized promotion distorts just about every “Top 10” and “Best of” post on the web. How can we get an unbiased helpful review when they are primarily made up of affiliate links?

Side note: It’s the reason we started the WhiP, to help cut through the crap. The WhiP is our affiliate-free, hand-picked, professionally-curated, pun-filled WordPress newsletter. The best tutorials, reviews, opinions, and more from around the web. It’s both ad free and $ free. Cheers!

On the other hand, we have thousands of members that need a, “thank you”. You love WPMU DEV and sing her praise on your website, to your friends and clients, at Meetups and at WordCamps.

So, we set out to create a tool that minimizes the damage done by a few that take advantage of and manipulate the system and honors the loyal long-standing readers and WPMU DEV fanatics.

From the bottom of Devman’s heart, thank you.

Introducing Our new ‘Refer a Friend’ Program

It’s not cash but it’s good as gold… and it could end up in a lifetime membership saving you thousands of dollars.

A free WordPress Form Builder with Calculations and Payments?!

Forminator 1.7 is here including calculations and Stripe payments. A new bar has been set for what you can expect for free from your WordPress form builder plugin!

Not familiar? It’s time for a change.

Name a lead generating, money making, revenue growing website that doesn’t have some way to capture information… you can’t!

Forms are as essential to WordPress as water is to a fish. But licensing a usable form builder, with a sensible UI that looks absolutely brilliant in just about any WordPress theme, is expensive.

Forminator changes everything as the first completely free, premium form plugin for WordPress. We released version 1.0 with basic form essentials, 1000+ 3rd-party integrations, and a fancy poll and quiz builder.

Then we made it free on WordPress.org.

To make it a suitable replacement for your paid favorites required advanced calculations and a way to take payments. Today, Forminator delivers on both fronts.

Before we take a look at the new features, install Forminator on your site so that you can follow along :) Get it on WordPress.org or install Forminator Pro with 24/7 live support and get access to our complete suite of performance, optimization, security, marketing, hosting, and site management tools free for 30-days.

Forminator the Super Calculator!

Is it actually that cool? Yes. Yes, it is. Calculations open a whole new world of form building. Collect information, generate leads, take orders, and engage visitors…Forminator is a lead-magnet. There are literally thousands of combinations but here are a few ideas:

  • A registration form with upgrade packages and unique pricing
  • Sell a tee shirt with size, color, price and tax variations
  • Add a BMI and/or calorie intake calculator to your health and fitness blog
  • Embed a loan calculator into your finance site
  • Display a due date calculator for your midwife client
  • Interactive insta-quote or service estimator
  • Share an ROI calculator on your agency site
  • And on, and on, and on…

Let’s see how it works. Devman wants to sell graphic tees to his fan base so let’s build out his order form.

Setup a new form in Forminator
Setup your new form and give it a name.

Using selectors, we’ll add color, style, size, and quantity variations. The larger sizes had a markup from our distributor but with Forminator we were able to easily re-calculate and adjust the price based on size and quantity.

Forminator selector variations for WordPress forms
Use selectors to create size variables.

And of course, Devman’s local government wants a piece of the sales. Using another calculation module we can figure the additional percentage for taxes.

Forminator calculation options
Set additional fees like taxes or shipping

You can also include an up-sell for shipping, but Devman will just fly over and deliver for himself. ;)

If math is not your strong suit, Forminator has your back. Forminator gives visual queues for what is being totaled.

Once the calculations are run, we’ll capture the name, email address, and phone number so we can deliver the shirt and add them to the Devman superfan contact list.

Forminator calculations
Upload and share your form to start taking orders.

What About Payments?

Forminator 1.7 includes Stripe (and PayPal is on the way). You captured all required information, used calculations to tally up the total, and now your users can place their order directly from Forminator. Woohoo!

Stripe payment popup
Take payments without leaving your form.

To activate the Stipe module, go to the Forminator ‘Settings’ tab in the sidebar, choose ‘Payments’, click ‘Configure’ and add your publishable keys to the pop-up module. At the bottom of the module click ‘connect’ and you’re all ready to start taking payments.

Stripe Forminator integration
Drop in your Stripe code under Settings>Payment.

No more manual payments for Devman. We can go back over to his order form and add the Stripe module. Set the payment option to ‘variable’ and choose the total to bill based on your user’s options. In this case, we go with ‘grand total’.

Use calculations to set variable payments.
Use calculations for variable payment options.

Not using Stripe or PayPal? Forminator’s API is open and well-documented. Build, share, or sell your own Forminator integrations.

Take a look at how it turned out on Devman’s site. Use credit card number 4242 4242 4242 4242, any future date (MM/YY), and 3 digit CVC to have a play. Cheers!

So much more…

Forminator 1.7 was packed with over 25 additions, improvements, and fixes (it probably could’ve been 2.0). But our developers still have some big moves up their sleeves.

Forminator is now by far the most robust, free form builder for WordPress and stands firm against your favorite premium solutions. So do yourself a favor and save yourself, and your customers, thousands of dollars in licensing fees. Download Forminator from WordPress.org or, if you’re a member, install Forminator Pro from the WPMU DEV Dashboard plugin including hero hider white labeling, access to all our premium plugins, 3 sites of managed WordPress hosting, and 24/7 live support.

Hummingbird 2.0: Mobile Scans and Advanced Speed Tests… Vroom!

Hummingbird performance tests, reports, and recommendations just got a major upgrade but to get access to the all new lean-mean-humming-machine…you need to update!

In November, Google made much needed changes to PageSpeed Insights. Speed is now being calculated based on actual user experience and a site performance analysis. Thanks to this new Lighthouse integration, Hummingbird is able to see where your page is slowing in the loading process and offer better solutions for fixing performance issues.

No more shooting in the dark! No more PTSD (Performance Test Stress Disorder). Now you can find speed bottlenecks, put a solution in place that actually makes things faster for your visitors, and move on. Bing bang bong!

The upgraded performance test along with +25 other upgrades and improvements are available now. Get your copy of Hummingbird on WordPress.org or start your 30-day free trial to get Hummingbird Pro and the entire WPMU DEV performance suite.

Now that you’re all set up, Take a look at the highlight features in version 2.0, including advanced Multisite integration, a new reports module with Lighthouse recommendations, and performance report customizations.

Are you an active Hummingbird user? Upgrade to 2.0. Not only is it better, Hummingbird 2.0+ ensures compatibility with the new Google PageSpeed Insights moving forward. Enjoy. You’re welcome. No…really. It’s our pleasure!

Hummingbird Google PageSpeed Lighthouse integration
Hummingbird has new recommendations based on actual site performance.

New score metrics include:

  • Speed Index
  • First Meaningful Paint
  • First Contentful Paint
  • Time to Interactive
  • First CPU Idle

What’s Paint Got to do With It?

We recently took an in depth look at the new speed results and if you’re serious about site performance, become well acquainted with the new metrics. If CliffNotes are your thing, basically the new index is calculated based on how quickly content is seen, delivered, and able to be interacted with.

In short, Hummingbird 2.0 uses these new metrics to make your site load blazing fast.

Make it Mobile First

Site performance has many facets. You can score a perfect 100 on Desktop performance and have a horrific mobile experience. NOT ANYMORE! Why? ‘Cause Hummingbird 2.0 lets you choose between mobile and desktop scores.

Activate mobile speed tests from Hummingbird
Hummingbird lets you view and send both Desktop and Mobile reports.

Working on client sites where you want to exclude certain elements of your report? Hummingbird lets you hide score metrics, audit information, and add historic field data to both the dashboard and The Hub. Select what information is relevant based on who has access.

And now Reports can be configured to display both Desktop and Mobile speed results.

Subsite and Network Admin Upgrade

Hey, Multisite friends! This one’s for you. Hummingbird is an excellent performance tool for both WordPress and Multisite. Today she boasts some fancy new Multisite specific tools. Give or limit access to the Asset Optimization Module for subsite users.

Hummingbird Asset Optimization tools for Multisite subsites
Hummingbird gets special Multisite integration for Asset Optimization.

Set access based on role, enable or disable subsite access to the CDN, and troubleshoot with the subsite debug log.

Give All Your Sites Superhero Speed

With advanced performance tests, one-click fixes, recommendations, a powerful cache suite, reporting tools, Multisite integration, and a bunch more, Hummingbird has quickly become a power tool for getting top performance out of WordPress sites. We’re not just saying that, we tested her. See how she stacks up against the others.

But you don’t need me to tell you. We think the best way to fall in love with Hummingbird is to experience all her tools for yourself. That’s why we’ve set you up with a 30-day free membership.

Our WordPress super team is so dang impressive we sound like a bunch of braggers when we talk about them. I don’t want you to feel like we’re over selling you. So we made Hummingbird free. Free on WordPress.org or get started with a WPMU DEV membership and try Hummingbird Pro 2.0, Smush image optimization, Defender security, The Hub dashboard manager, backups, 24/7 live chat support, our marketing power tools, on unlimited sites free for 30-days. Branda 3.1 Smarter SMTP, Signup Codes, and +25 Upgrades

Branda is all about giving you fast easy control over white labeling WordPress…and quite frankly she rocks it. She just got some special new configurations for managing users, lightning fast setup, compatibility checks, and even more brand magic.

“How is that possible”, you ask? Branda 3.0 was unveiled just a month ago with an incredible new design and setup wizard. It was a big hit by the way. Thanks, everyone for the feedback.

But with Branda now sporting our signature hero interface we were able to quickly add +25 additions and feature upgrades.

So let’s dive in and explore the highlight features in Branda 3.1.

Not using Branda yet? Get a copy with a free 30-day WPMU DEV trial. No obligation. Cancel at any time and keep Branda as our gift.

Signup Codes With User Role Settings

Have an exclusive offer that requires site registration? Want to limit spam registrations? Looking to allow specific signups to access different user roles? Time to try Branda’s brand new Signup Code features.

Signup Codes make it so only people with a special code can register to your site.

Here’s what’s new:

  • Support for multiple codes – before you could set up just one registration code at a time. Now you can create as many unique codes as you need.
  • Give each code a user role – the ability to assign users a specific role based on the code they use when registering.

Allow a visitor to register as a subscriber without a code or create a special code that lets a user set up a Writer or Editor account. Not only do signup codes improve function, but it also helps eliminate unnecessary bot signups. Thank you again, Branda!

Branda user roles and multiple signup codes
Use Signup Codes for letting users register for different user roles.

Branda Importer Enhancements

We’re continually looking for ways to simplify configuration for people managing multiple sites, from setting up new sites to site migration. The Branda import and export tool makes it easy to move your configuration options across multiple sites.

In 3.1 that includes the logo, background and favicon image files for the Admin Bar, DB Error Page, Login Screen, Site Status Pages, and Website Mode modules. Clone your look and style settings and load up your images all in a few clicks.

Branda Import and export all your settings and images
Import the specific modules and images you want for speedy set up.

The importer also regenerates your log DB error and site status files after an import so you get all the fresh looks without sharing the information.

Simplify SMTP Email Setting

By default, WordPress uses the PHP Mail function to send emails. That is not great, especially for sites that are scaling up. With Branda, you can use SMTP to send your messages including sending from a 3rd-party mail provider.

If your system emails keep ending up in the spam folder then you definitely need to check this feature out.

Branda SMTP settings for WordPress
Branda lets you send system emails from your favorite 3rd-party services.

Again, this option is not new to Branda, but she did get smarter. In 3.1, Branda checks for other SMTP plugins on your site, notifies you of conflicts, and can even import SMTP settings from other popular tools.

Consolidate with Branda and she’ll take care of the set up.

WPMU DEV Hero Hider

Don’t really need to spend too much time here, but the the best white label plugin for WordPress got the WPMU DEV Hero Hider. This has become a favorite for our members. Basically, instead of displaying WPMU DEV branding and hero graphics you can replace them with your own… now including Branda.

Breath Freely! Your Security with WPMU DEV is Stronger Than Ever

Is WordPress security a big deal to you and your clients? Why would I ask such a silly question? Because our security suite has new superpowers including Defender location-based IP blocking and Automate Safe Upgrade scans…now on up to 5 pages.

What’s the WPMU DEV Security Suite, you Ask?

We’ve built a fierce set of WordPress protectors to help ward off core, plugin, and theme attacks, minimize downtime, clear blacklisting, and backups that restore your services in case of emergency. If you are not familiar with our security hero lineup here’s an overview:

  • Defender – He’s the brute-squad of WordPress security optimization. 2-factor authentication, audit logs, security tweaks, 404 and IP lockout, blacklist monitoring, scans, security recommendations and more.
  • Automate – Most successful hacks are the result of out-of-date software – core, plugins, or theme files. Automate make sure your site is always up-to-date. And he uses Safe Upgrade to ensure the updates won’t break your site. It’s safer and a huge time saver.
  • Snapshot – He’s got your backups covered. Scheduled and on-demand backups that include 10GB of secure cloud storage.
  • 24/7 Hero Support – Has your site already been hacked? We have experts standing by to help with the cleanup and restoration.
  • Managed Hosting – If most successful hacks come from out-of-date software. The other half is unsecure hosting. Our members now get 3 free hosted sites built with the ultimate in speed and security in mind (more on that in the coming months).

If you’re not running Defender, Automate, along with our complete security toolkit get started free now for the next 30-days. Then come back and see how the new features work.

Defender Geo-Based IP Lockout

While working on the Roadmap Roundup I realized we hadn’t properly introduced Defender 2.1 and its fancy new features. While 2.1 one is not completely new (I’m sure you’ve familiarized yourself with the UX improvements and hero hidder), the big addition is Geo-based IP Lockout.

That’s fancy talk for blocking users based on the country they’re located in. If you don’t expect or want traffic from a specific country, blocking the IP will protect your site entirely from unwanted hackers and bots.

This could be great for a local service-based business looking to eliminate spam requests or hack attempts from foreign countries.

And it really couldn’t be easier to set up.

In Defender’s IP Lockout module under IP Banning you’ll find a new Locations setting. Just click to Download for the latest Geo IP Database.

Defender Geo-location IP Lockout
Click download to get started.

It only takes a few seconds. Then pick the countries you want to include or exclude from having access to your site. It’s that easy!

Country select for geo-location IP ban in Defender
Pick the countries you want to ban or whitelist.

It’s one more way Defender makes complex security features easy for the everyday WordPress user.

Automate Safe Upgrade Technology X5

Not so long ago, the idea of running automated WordPress updates was laughable. Especially on complex sites with multiple integrations. “What if the update crashes my whole site and I’m not there to fix it?

This made managing WordPress updates, especially across tens or hundreds of sites, a nightmare.

Automate changes all that. When a core, plugin, or theme update is detected, Automate runs a Snapshot backup, updates your site, and uses Safe Upgrade to scan your home page for changes. If your site breaks it will revert to the previous version.

Hundreds of thousands of sites are now using Automate with Safe Upgrade.

It’s pretty awesome, but we wanted to make it even Safer. So now you can apply the Safe Upgrade scan to 5 pages of your choice.

Take a look see!

Visit the Automate tab in the Hub and scroll to the Settings. Under Perform Safe Upgrade Check click the Home page option.

Automate Performance Safe Upgrade Check.
Add pages to the Performance Safe Upgrade Check.

In the popup module, add your five most valued pages and save.

Add extra pages to check in with Automate Safe Upgrade
Choose pages to scan with Safe Upgrade.

Now Automate will scan and report on each of the pages you’ve added. And if anything goes wrong during an upgrade, he’ll automatically revert to the previous version.

With Automate, you don’t have to sacrifice safety or convenience.

WPMU DEV Gives you a Stronger Faster WordPress

We know security is not one-size fits all and not everyone can afford a team of security experts. So we’ve made Defender free on WordPress.org. Including Geo-location IP lockout.

But if your not sure and really want to try WPMU DEV’s pro tools packaged with 24/7 support and expert site cleanup we’ve set up your free 30-day trial here. Enjoy!

How to Remove the “Proudly Powered By WordPress” Link

So, your website has finally come together. You’ve stormed up an eye-catching header, your content is on point, and you are ready to unleash your site to the world.

Then you notice the “Proudly Powered By WordPress” link on your footer. Is your masterpiece forever condemned to being a WordPress mascot, or can the footer be removed? The good news is, it CAN.

WordPress footer credits
If you run a business website you’ll want to change or remove the footer credits.

You’ve probably noticed the footer message that links back to WordPress.org: Proudly Powered by WordPress.

It’s a small message that lives in the footer section of several native WordPress themes, which rightfully gives a shout to the WordPress project volunteers. But while some people may not find this unappealing, you may have bigger plans for your website and this ‘shoutout’ may not be aligned with your plans. So here you are, trying to figure out how to remove the “proudly powered by WordPress” credit from your site. And that’s precisely what this post aims to help you achieve.

Is It Legal to Remove the WordPress Footer Credits?

You will be pleased to know that if you remove the WordPress footer from your website, you won’t get into trouble.

WordPress, as an entity, is free and licensed under the GPL (General Public License). This basically means you are well within your rights to use, modify, and even redistribute WordPress.

If that’s not enough reassurance for you, any WordPress theme you download from the official WordPress.org theme directory is covered by the license. So, you’re also free to make edits to those.

With that out of the way, in the rest of this post I will show you how to edit or even remove the WordPress copyright footer from your website – especially if you are using a WordPress default theme.

Looking to rebrand or white label your WordPress site completely including the login page and dashboard? Check out Branda. Branda lets you remove or replace the WordPress branding your theme can’t, without having to touch a line of code.

Always Backup Before Making Changes

First things first. Before making any changes on your website, it is always a good idea to back up the contents of your site, so that if you accidentally break anything, you can quickly fix it by restoring your website to an earlier version. Many people have lost valuable information and even whole websites by failing to back their websites up, and we would hate to see the same happen to you.

If you’re a WPMU DEV member you can schedule your site to backup automatically with Snapshot. You can get both Snapshot and Branda when you start a free trial. Now, let’s delve in and explore the various ways through which you can remove the “powered by WordPress” footer from your website.

How to Hide the WordPress Copyright Footer

To hide the proudly powered by WordPress in the footer you’ll need:

  • Access to your WordPress admin area

Using CSS

This is the quick, easy but unsavory method that deserves a mention, but it is one that you should avoid. It involves adding some CSS to the Theme Customizer, and here’s how you can do this:

  1. Go to Appearance > Customize on the WordPress dashboard
  2. Click Additional CSS at the bottom of the menu
  3. Paste in the CSS code below

While this might seem like a quick, easy, workaround, the potential detrimental effect on your website SEO is not worth the risk. Spammers use a similar technique to hide links from users so Google could flag your site.

If however, you’re a bit of a dare-devil or losing search traffic doesn’t concern you (maybe the majority of your traffic doesn’t come from searches), feel free to use this method. If you’re more cautious or if the majority of your site traffic is from searches, read the next alternative option.

How to Remove the WordPress Copyright Footer

To change the footer you will need:

  • Access to your WordPress admin area
  • A text editor on your computer

Method #1: Via the WordPress Theme Customizer

Depending on what theme you are using, you may have the option to remove or edit the powered by WordPress footer directly in your theme customizer.

  1. Go to Appearance > Customize on the WordPress dashboard
  2. Click Footer > Bottom Bar
  3. You can either Disable Footer Credits or put your own text in Edit Footer Credit

Method #2: Via the Native Theme Options.

This works best for most third-party themes. Sometimes, the native WordPress theme customizer may not be equipped to edit the footer in WordPress, so your best bet is to check in the theme settings first.

If you have been unable to locate the option to disable footer credits inside the theme customizer, you could also check the ‘Widgets’ section, or inside the individual theme’s options.

Method #3: Editing Footer.php

If maintaining your website’s SEO is important to you, editing your theme’s footer.php file is another easy way to remove the WordPress footer credit link. The footer.php file contains the information your site needs to display the footer of your site, including, you guessed it, the WordPress credit link.

The safest way to edit the WordPress footer code on your website is by using an SFTP file manager such as Filezilla to access your core files. For security reasons, some web hosts disable the option to edit your theme code directly from inside your WordPress admin area. If you notice that you are unable to locate your website’s theme editor inside your WordPress admin area, it might have been disabled by your host. This means that you will need an SFTP file manager to access your files. But don’t worry – we have you covered on how to go about this.

  1. Connect to your site using an SFTP file manager. If you’re uncertain about how to do this, this in-depth tutorial will guide you through the process.
  2. Navigate to the public_html/wp-content/themes directory.
  3. Open the directory containing the theme you wish to edit.
  4. Locate the footer.php file, then copy it to the appropriate child theme directory.
  5. Open the footer.php file using a text editor and search and delete the footer code, depending on what theme you’re using.

Twenty Sixteen theme:

Twenty Seventeen theme:

Twenty Nineteen theme:

  1. Click “Update File” and the footer credit link will be gone or modified.

Quick warning: Before making any changes to your WordPress theme, it’s always a good idea to create a child theme, rather than directly edit your WordPress website’s code.  There are a couple of reasons why you should do this:

  1. Any updates that bring your theme up to the latest version could potentially undo all your hard work and revert your footer back to its pre-edited state.
  2. By editing the code directly on your website, there’s a chance that you could change or delete the wrong code and break your website.

If you’re new to creating child themes, you can read more about it in our guide How to Create a WordPress Child Theme.

Happy Coding!

I hope you found this post useful for removing or editing the “Proudly powered by WordPress” footer link credit in your website. As you can see, there are several ways to skin the cat, so please feel free to try out other methods mentioned above if one does not work. Your WPMU DEV 2019 Quarter 2 Roadmap Roundup Just Landed!

We start each quarter visiting our product Roadmap and spilling the beans on what to look for moving forward.

When we published our roadmap nearly 2 years ago (can you believe it), it created a unique direct line of communication with our members. We knew it would help them make better business decisions and plan for the future. What we didn’t expect was the dramatic impact it would have on what we develop, when we develop, and how much our process would improve.

We’ll be first to admit we can still improve…I mean, what is a Roadmap but a path to improvement. But if you’re managing WordPress websites and are not a member, it’s time to give your products, services, business, support, and dare I say…hosting…an upgrade. Start today with a free trial and follow along as we cover what’s new and what you can expect in the months to come.

First, a Pat on the Back, High Fives all Around, and an “Almost There”

Q1 of 2019 was dedicated to polishing and knocking off those beta tags. Our Dev’s knocked a lot off the list:

  • Goodbye Ultimate Branding, Hello Branda! – Ultimate Branding got a complete hero makeover. The easiest and fastest way to White Label WordPress – Done and done. With more than 30 modules for customizing the WordPress CMS, Branda is enough of a reason to join WPMU DEV.
  • Smush Lazy Loading, CDN, and much more – Smush image optimization just keeps getting better and now she has her own CDN! This unlocked WebP conversion, automatic resizing, and blazing fast 40 Tbps image delivery from 45 share points around the globe.
  • Hustle + Gutenberg – Landed in glorious fashion including Gutenberg integration and reCAPTCHA for opt-in forms. Less spam more glam.
  • Forminator Quiz Booster Pack – Forminator Forms had some epic 3rd-party integration you wanted included for Quizzes so we delivered. Forminator now includes Quiz integrations, a new wizard, and multi correct answers.
  • Defender IP lockout upgrade – Geo IP blocking for stopping hackers by location. Shweet!
  • Hummingbird brings Uptime Reports to the dashboard – Hummingbird lets you schedule email reports that include Response Time data and any Downtime logs from the selected period.
  • Shipper set sale with our all hands on deck support crew – A site migration tool that makes it easy for users to move their WordPress install to our Hosting. Automation is cool but Shipper is backed by our crew of live agents to guarantee smooth sailing.
  • We’ve doubled the number of hosted sites – But what about that dang beta tag? The feedback for our new managed hosting solution has been astounding. Based on your feedback and our tests, hosting has been technically solid for months…we’re just polishing the upgrade process and integrations with the Hub. But more on that bellow.

That’s a happy list, but it’s old news ;) So, onward and upward my friends. Let’s explore what’s next in the queue so you can share your valuable feedback. Let’s save your business even more time and money.

The Future is Now…WPMU DEV 2019 Q2 Goals

Hummingbird 2.0

Hummingbird featured image
Hummingbird brings your pagespeed closer to the perfect 100.

We’ve been running some tests with our performance plugins and the results have shocked even us (comparison post coming soon). But spoiler alert, Hummingbird is the best performance tool on the market.

We’ve got a few more tricks for Hummingbird in development as I write.

First, we are rewriting her performance recommendations. Better information that’s easier to understand.

Hummingbird is also getting Mobile performance testing! With Google’s move to mobile-first performance rankings, we’d be foolish to forget about the phones of the world. Needless to say…this one is kind of a big deal.

Along that line Hummingbird will soon let you pick the page you want to test! Did you know your PageSpeed check is not a site speed performance check? Test the pages that are important and optimize each page for the best results.

And of course, even better caching. Hummingbirds cache suite is already best in class. We’re adding support for some of the newer platforms, plus emoji cache, preloading, and scheduled clearing.

An upgrade worthy of her 2.0 semantic versioning.

Hustle 4.0

SmartCrawl 2.3

SEO Audit - SmartCrawl SEO Plugin
SmartCrawl is queen of content optimization.

We’re also bringing back Moz integration and improving your WP Checkup reports.

If you’re wanting world-class SEO that doesn’t interfere with your content creation, upgrade to SmartCrawl.
