This Week in Spring: NoHTTP, Organizational Consistency, Kotlin Microservices

Hi, Spring fans! Can you believe it? We’re already almost halfway through June! Summer’s nearly here! It’s 97 degrees Fahrenheit/37 degrees Celsius in San Francisco! That’s nuts! I’m glad I’m in the beautiful Amsterdam and Eindhoven, NL, beating the heat, though. What a privilege. We’ve got a busy week, as always, so let’s get to it!

This Week in Spring: Runtime, Debugging, and Boosting Microservices Performance

Hi, Spring fans! Welcome to another installment of This Week in Spring! This week, I’m in... I’m home! Look at that! I’m home for the epic SpringOne Tour San Francisco event. I’m super excited to be here in this amazing weather with an amazing community. It’s been a busy week though! Last week, I returned from Spain for my kid’s graduation, and I am still so so proud. Tomorrow, I fly to Cork, Ireland, for the Cork JUG, and then, it’s off to London for a wedding. So, lots of travel, but a bit of a lighter load.

We’ve got a lot to cover, so let’s get to it!

Java Annotated Monthly — May 2019

This month, we have a guest section on security since there were so many relevant security articles. We have the results of two developer surveys and a huge culture and community section that explores some of the factors that might contribute to the results of those developer surveys. Of course, May’s Annotated Monthly also includes your regular fix of Java news, tutorials, and tips.

Java News

Big news, everyone! Java EE is dead. Again. What year is it? Why are the same headlines popping up, again and again, every year?

What Is Plagiarism? How to Avoid It and Cite Sources

Plagiarism, as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary, is “the action or practice of taking someone else's work, idea, etc., and passing it off as one's own.”

This includes copying and pasting text from other sources and inserting them into your own work, or even just rewording text from another source. Anything that does not reflect your own thoughts or ideas, with incorrect attributions, or a lack thereof, is an act of plagiarism.

This Week in Spring: Spring Cloud, Kafka, and More

Hi, Spring fans, and welcome to another installment of This Week in Spring! This week, I’m in colorful Chicago, Illinois, and magnificent Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I am so excited to be in both places. I’m in Chicago for the GOTO Chicago event, which is always fun, and I’m in Milwaukee for a meetup and, of course, to partake of local delicacies like Kopps, a Cousins sub, and a Spotted Cow beer. Life is great!

Did you see this epic image of the Chicago Lakeshore area I took the other day? Spring is truly in full swing! (I’ll ignore the buckets of rain that have been dumped on Chicago and Milwaukee just a day after that photo was taken…)

We’ve got a busy week in Spring, so without further ado, let’s get to it!

This Week in Spring: Releases, Podcasts, Debugging, and More

Hi, Spring fans, and welcome to another installment of This Week in Spring! This week, I’m in New York City for the Kafka Summit where I’ll be joining the excellent Tim Berglund, head of developer experience at Confluent, and James Watters, SVP at Pivotal, to talk about why Pivotal and Confluent are better together. Join us! Then, next week it’s off to South Africa (for the SpringOne Tour shows in Capetown and Johannesburg), and then, it’s off again to Mauritius for the DevConf. If you’re in any of those places, don’t hesitate to say hi!.

This Week in Spring: Kubernetes, Kotlin, KNative, and More

Hi, Spring fans! Welcome to another installment of This Week in Spring! I flew 14 hours to Tel Aviv, Israel. I then spent 28 hours on the ground visiting customers, visiting my friends at Codota, and then presenting to a packed house at the Israel Java User Group. Then, I flew another 14 hours back to San Francisco, CA, where I presented for a four-hour online course on using Kotlin with Spring Boot. Tonight, I’ll fly to Atlanta, GA, for the incredible DevNexus conference where I’ll be presenting (twice) with the good Dr. Venkat Subramaniam on Kotlin (and Spring) and more. And then, I’m doing a four-hour course on testing. Join me!

And, of course, we’ve got a lot to get to today ,so let’s get to it!

Java Desktop Links of the Week: February 18

It’s been a really long time – apologies for the massive gap since the last post. I promise to get back to more regular postings again. So without further ado, here are the links for this time:

JVM Advent Calendar: Two Years in the Life of AI, ML, DL, and Java [Links]

Now, back to what I was going to write about. If you ask me, I’ll already admit that I have NOT even scraped the surface of these topics. What I share here is a glimpse of what’s out there and each one of you might have discovered many more aspects of these topics as part of your daily professional and personal pursuits.

One of my motivations of putting this post and the links below together comes from the discussion we had during the LJC Unconference in November 2018, where Jeremie, Michael Bateman, and I, along with a number of LJC JUG members, gathered at a session discussing a similar topic. And, the questions raised by some were along the lines of "where does Java stand in the world of AI-ML-DL?," "how do I do any of these things in Java?, and "which libraries and frameworks should I use?"
